Part of Vesterbrogade, one of the busiest roads in the Copenhagen, is being closed to traffic to create a temporary urban park. This bold experiment, happening in the heart of the city, and speaks directly to the future I envision in my article on "how to reimagine mobility in a world obsessed with cars". Check out part 2 here: https://lnkd.in/eXb_3Fhd If you didn't catch part 1 👉 https://lnkd.in/dgxkJz8A And, if you're curious about the Copenhagen road-closure / temporary park experiment 👉https://lnkd.in/er7rdhKK #design #designit #mobility #sustainability

🌍🚶♀️ **Building Cities for People, Not Just Cars** 🚶♂️🌆 Imagine a city where footpaths are wide, tree-lined, and welcoming—a place where walking isn’t just a necessity but a joy. As urban landscapes grow, it’s time to rethink development. Pedestrian-friendly cities are healthier, greener, and more connected, offering spaces where people thrive over traffic. 💡 Here’s how we can make this a reality: ✅ **Revamp sidewalks**: Safer, wider, and accessible for all ages. ✅ **Mix it up**: Residential, work, and play spaces all within walking distance. ✅ **Boost public transit**: Walkable access to buses, metros, and more. ✅ **Bike & e-scooter lanes**: Sustainable alternatives that fit right in. ✅ **Car-free zones**: Transform bustling areas into peaceful, people-first spaces. 🌟 Let’s design cities that prioritize humans over horns, where every step brings us closer to a sustainable future. Architects and planners are leading the charge—are you ready to join them? 💬 Share your thoughts on pedestrian-friendly spaces. Our laziness has opened the way to a new trend 😏 It’s called the 15 minutes city! Imagine living in a city where everything you need—work, school, grocery stores, parks, and healthcare—is just a 15-minute walk or bike ride away. That’s the idea behind the “15-minute city” concept, and it’s starting to shape how we think about urban planning. 🚶♂️🚴♀️ This trend is picking up speed globally, especially in cities like Paris and Melbourne. The benefits are huge: 1️⃣ Less Commuting, More Living: Say goodbye to long, stressful commutes and hello to more time doing what you love. 2️⃣ Greener Living: With fewer car trips, we’re looking at lower carbon emissions and a step toward a more sustainable future. 🌱 3️⃣ Healthier, Happier Communities: Easy access to everything means more walking, biking, and overall better well-being. As #urbanplanners, #architects, and #developers, this shift could redefine how we design future spaces. It’s not just about building; it’s about building smarter and more sustainably. Whats your opinion on the 15-minute city? #UrbanPlanning #15MinuteCity #SustainableLiving #RealEstateTrends #CityDesign #FutureOfCities #Architecture #GreenLiving

🏆 Rotterdam wins Wallpaper* Design Award 2025 in the category 'Best Urban Action'. The city is praised for various aspects and developments: 🌳 About the City Projects: “Rotterdam has generated a wealth of schemes that aim to safeguard the city’s longevity and health. Key projects aim to bring nature back into the fold, creating green lungs in several neighbourhoods, including Rotterdam’s very own High Line, Hofbogenpark, a bio-inclusive raised park set on the site of an old railway line. 💦 About nature and design: “Local biotech studio Nova Innova has launched a device using microbial fuel cell technology to highlight water quality levels, and is studying ways to harness the energy from photosynthesis to illuminate parks.” ⚓️ About the opening of Fenix and Nederlands Fotomuseum: “Both are set in reinvented warehouses in the old port, and flag how reuse can play a key role, too, promising an exciting year, and decade, ahead for the Dutch city.” ✍️ Ellie Stathaki #rotterdam #rotterdammakeithappen #urbandevelopment #urbanism #builtenvironment #resilience #futurecities #newdutch

"Let's talk about design today! In a world that is becoming increasingly urban, there is far too little focus on urban concepts. Urban space is limited and urgently needs new and attractive solutions. I myself use car sharing, cross-city tickets and bicycles - but today's city dweller needs much more. Let's work together on innovative solutions to make our cities more livable and sustainable 💡🌆 #UrbanDesign #Innovation #Sustainability #CityLife"

It has been a real pleasure to meet Sara Kolata from Disrupt MAG to share the story of Gehl - Making Cities for People and my personal learnings leading Gehl through now more than a couple of decades of change. I am humble and honoured by the interest in the ground breaking and thought leading work of the Gehl practise and our amazing team. Considering the major shifts needed in urban practises globally we have always known we need to collaborate for impact and results. We need more urban nature not less - We need inclusive design and engagement practises and less silos - We need more urban transformation and less expansion - We need sustainable mobility networks and less separation of systems - We need better health and less loneliness. At Gehl, we engage as facilitators of positive change of these shifts. Real change happens when access and experiences are shared between policy makers, politicians, leaders of companies, institutions and citizens. #citiesforall #socialinfrastructure #citiesforlife
