Did you know that systems with solid oxide fuel cells (#SOFC) can run on numerous fuels such as ammonia, natural gas, biogas, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, dimethyl ether and other? In the Center for Hydrogen Technologies (CTH2), Instytut Energetyki - Instytut Badawczy we are developing SOFC-based units of that type. 💡 In our recent paper Numerical analysis of natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia fueled solid oxide fuel cell based micro cogeneration units with anodic gas recirculation (Maciej Bąkała, Katsiaryna Martsinchyk (Razumkova), Konrad Motyliński, Jakub Kupecki, Krystian Machaj) we investigated cogeneration based on SOFC which can operate on ammonia, natural gas and hydrogen. In order to boost the performance we engage recirculation of anodic off gas. With that, the electric efficiency as high as 61.8% can be achieved in 10 kW-class system. Is this the highest number which was reported for CHP based on SOFC? No, but we have considered operating conditions which assure long durability and limited degradation of the SOFC stack.
