Addressing Water Woes in Ranchi! 🚰 Ranchi Municipal Corporation has kicked off a vital initiative to combat water scarcity. With a focused survey on groundwater levels in 25 affected wards, including 11 designated as persistent dry zones, the aim is to pinpoint challenges and implement effective solutions. Despite previous efforts, these areas continue to face water supply issues. A dedicated team of engineers is conducting a detailed assessment, prioritizing dry zones. The survey results will play a pivotal role in shaping water distribution plans, beginning March. 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒓, 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒆𝒅𝑰𝒏 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑩𝒊𝒉𝒂𝒓’𝒔 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒔 As someone who has worked closely with the Bihar government, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing various officials, from IAS officers to state ministers and others. However, one interview stands out—the one with the engineers from the Bihar water resources department who were deputed in Kendriya Bhandar, Digha. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: Bihar faces an annual battle with floods, resulting in significant losses and devastation. The flood management system in the state has undergone rapid changes over the years. During the interview, I discovered that the traditional methods of flood control were being replaced by modern techniques. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝: In those days, materials like Jio bags, Mega bags, EC bags, Nylon Crete, BA wires, Parco Pyne, G.T. filters, and gabion's played a crucial role. These were stored in Kendriya Bhandar and used as needed. Witnessing this shift from tradition to innovation left me impressed and hopeful for Bihar’s future. 🔎 Looking forward 🏞️ Nature-based solutions (NbS) have the potential to be pivotal in tackling critical environmental challenges in the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam. 🌊 The Brahmaputra River is prone to devastating floods and erosion (post-1950 seismic event). NbS can be implemented in restoring floodplains, reforesting riverbanks, and constructing bio-dykes,to absorb and dissipate floodwaters effectively. These methods are not only more sustainable than traditional grey-engineering solutions but will also enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health. 🛶 Wetlands are kidney of the ecosystem. In Assam, wetlands are crucial for biodiversity, water purification and flood control. By conserving & restoring the wetlands,the capacity to regulate water flows and aquatic habitats improved. Initiatives such as creating buffer zones and planting native plant and grass species can help maintain wetland integrity and resilience against climate change impacts. 🪙 Implementing NbS fosters local economic growth by creating livelihood opportunities through agroforestry and sustainable tourism. These practices also enhance agricultural productivity and fisheries, directly benefiting local communities.
