🐧 𝐈 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧... The potential client was great, the money was superb, but the request jarred with my ethos and methodology to fully build people's confidence when it comes to using their voice; public speaking, presenting, asking a question in a meeting, pitching, anything which currently fills them with dread when it comes to using their voice. I was asked to record each person and get them to do a presentation to the group at the end of the workshop - it wasn't for media training or anything formal, and it flew in-the-face of ending my workshop on a high and giving people the ability to prepare and feel ready to take on their public speaking challenge. I wasn't comfortable with people watching themselves back on camera when that didn't mimic the real life scenario. This method of training has it's brilliant place for to-camera public speaking training, but not for live presentations or team meetings, or general confidence building IMO. We all criticise ourselves so much, so we don't need to watch the "ums and ers" back, or hate how we sound and look when our confidence is already shot. I also prefer recording to be kept individual rather than team-wide. This was my first "no" for the Chatty Penguin Academy. I wobbled about it, but decided it was for the right reasons. I am doing these confidence workshops and my online course to build people's confidence up using the ways I know how and what has worked for myself and others, I didn't want to compromise on that. Integrity is one of my values, so is empathy. My values feel at conflict with commercials at times, but it's super healthy in business that different people require different services and objectives and there isn't a one size fits all. I am grateful to have these opportunities and excited to help people where I can and respectfully bow out where I can't. Just sharing for any other freelancers/consultants who are trying hard to drum up great business but also navigating the right business, the balance is real.

I’ve shared my Commercial Empathy model lots! It rocks! Just had a question sent to me asking my opinion. Similarly to a post yesterday by Andy Kaye commenting on consulting with no expectation of remuneration! My time and my experience, vast array of experience qualifications and approach to imparting that onto the next person - be that in a classroom, 121, board room etc - comes at a price. Otherwise I’d be in B&Q and taking things from the shelf with zero intention of paying for it - really?! The email has been filed and when my separate email commenting on my fees and reciprocated business commitment is answered - I’ll respond and then invoice. I’ve used Commercial Empathy (CE), primarily, to manage change cultures. Todays freebie is when you use your freelance associate / consultants. Spare a CE thought for their time and expertise.
