Requirements Quality Tools. “Keep an open mind.” Embarking on the journey of utilizing a requirements quality tool for the first time can initially be an incredibly humbling experience, especially when the tool produces unfavourable results. These initial results can be discouraging, frustrating, and even feel like a personal attack, especially when investing a substantial amount of time. When seeing the many areas of weakness, the author may not understand the most effective approach to improving. Many times, we want to fix everything all at once. This is an ineffective approach, which can be overwhelming, as the results are not a direct correlation to the effort put forward. First, one must approach the feedback from the tool with an open mind. Understanding the reasons for flagging the requirements and acknowledging the guidance provided, “Rules sets and best practices,” is the first step of this improvement journey. Instead of looking at the document as a whole, one must see where the greatest area of improvement lies and tackle this first. In doing this you now are harnessing the power of a requirements quality tool. For example, if a document containing 115 requirements is analyzed and the tool identifies 19 requirements, 17% of the requirements have vague language, then this would be a great place to start. By taking a methodical approach to improve your requirements document with the aid of a requirements quality tool, the author will see faster overall results, thus validating the effort put into fixing the issues. This will improve the overall quality of the document, thus resulting in less rework in later stages.
