Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of our greatest public health threats. Over the past 10 years, we’ve seen important progress in tackling AMR. But it hasn’t been enough. The global response has not matched the scale of the threat. Political action remains too weak and fragmented. This week, the UN General Assembly will host the second-ever High-Level Meeting on AMR. It’s a pivotal moment for global leaders to strengthen collective action for a more effective global AMR response. Questions about #mpox? This week the World Health Organization declared the current outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). This declaration will support a coordinated response across countries to stop the outbreak in its tracks and save lives. As noted in the press release, "The emergence last year and rapid spread of a new virus strain in DRC, clade 1b, which appears to be spreading mainly through sexual networks, and its detection in countries neighbouring the DRC is especially concerning, and one of the main reasons for the declaration of the PHEIC." Read the full release: https://lnkd.in/ezRPKx9S And watch the media briefing here: https://lnkd.in/ef9KU_z4 You can also learn more about the monkeypox virus here: https://lnkd.in/evAXPTAh And access additional resources in the Risk communication and community engagement readiness and response toolkit: mpox https://lnkd.in/eM2u5Ekg In situations like this, knowledge is power. In light of the World Health Organization's recent declaration of #mpox as a public health emergency of international concern (#PHEIC), it is essential to understand what mpox is and how it affects individuals. Mpox is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus and is categorized into two distinct clades: clade I, and clade II. Mpox remains a significant threat, with recent surges in cases—particularly from clades Ia and Ib—in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other affected regions raising considerable concern. As we work together to mitigate the impact of mpox, staying informed about the virus is key to effective prevention and treatment. Learn more on WHO’s website: https://lnkd.in/drvpM43B #MpoxAwareness

Today is #WorldHepatitisDay. 1.3 million people in the world die each year from hepatitis and the number of deaths is rising. If we are to reach the World Health Organization’s goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030, it’s time for action. #WorldHepatitisDay #HepCantWait #TimeforAction #GileadSciences

Health should not be dependent on wealth. But it is. Infectious Disease - my chosen specialty within medicine - is remarkably & historically effective at exposing health disparities and inequities; TB in this insightful opinion piece 👇🏾 is just one example. Within the United States and beyond our borders globally the 'Health Wealth Gap' must be closed. There is no one strategy, intervention, tool or policy that will achieve this but we must, across the fields of health policy, public health (& other disciplines) continue to do all we can against what can seem like insurmountable odds of success. To quote Master Yoda "Do or do not. There is no try." Doing implies action. I remain committed, along with so many others, to 'doing' in this context, in this space, for the rest of my career. One drop at a time ... oceans are after all made up of many drops of water. #healthpolicy #publichealth #healthwealthgap #wholehealth #healthdisparities #healthequity
“Humanity has had the tools to diagnose, treat and prevent TB for decades. Because of that, this airborne bacterial respiratory disease, once the cause of about 25 percent of all deaths in the United States, is no longer a widespread threat to public health in wealthy countries. But that’s far from true in lower-income countries.” - Dr. Atul Gawande While we have the tools to combat TB, achieving a global equitable response requires a united effort. Governments, communities, and health organizations must collaborate and ensure lifesaving measures are accessible to all. https://lnkd.in/dZye3KV2
