Someday, when my grandchildren ask me what I did during the pandemic, I can point to the book on my shelf, The Business of Race (McGraw-Hill, 2021). Writing this book with my dear friend Gina Greenlee was a life-changing experience. Since then Gina and I have delivered dozens of talks for corporations, universities, associations, non-profits, and podcasts. What's been most rewarding, however, are the professionals we get to work with during our 6-week live learning experience. I had the pleasure this week of attending the Alliance Manchester Business School three-day Festival of Business. As a social housing board member, this week's discussions at AMBS were enlightening and refreshing, and here are some of my key takeaways. These insights may help us enhance change and foster innovation in our sector: 🎯 Business Transformation: - A clear vision and strategy aligned with individual goals are crucial. - In a rapidly changing world, collaborative efforts are key to solving common challenges. How do you foster collaboration in your team? - Identify whether you lead change or support it. - Emphasise continuous learning and reskilling. What new skills are you focusing on this year? 👫🏽 People and Society: - Strong values and a positive company culture drive employee retention. - Connecting employees to the company’s mission is essential. How do you ensure your team feels connected to your mission? - Employee priorities are shifting towards lifestyle-focused approaches. 💡 Innovation and Technology: - The innovation landscape will inevitably have winners and losers. - Lifelong learning, supported by governments, educational institutions, and businesses, is essential. - Adopt an agile mindset and flexible working methods to seize the right opportunities. - Long-term strategies need to be adaptable due to the fast pace of change. Celebrating a Century of Impact: An X Quiz It Quiz Experience with the A.M.M. Foundation Last month, I had the unique privilege of stepping into the role of quizmaster, orchestrating an event that was far more than a mere contest of knowledge. It was a celebration, a reflection, and most importantly, a deep dive into the transformative power of corporate social responsibility. This quiz was part of a series of events designed to commemorate the Centenary of the A.M.M. Foundation, marking a hundred years of unwavering commitment to societal upliftment. As participants from various arms of the Foundation gathered, the quiz unfolded not just as a test of intellect but as a powerful narrative spotlighting the substantial, often under-the-radar work done by institutions like the Foundation. Through each question, we explored the depth of the Foundation's initiatives - from transforming educational landscapes to pioneering healthcare solutions and beyond. It was enlightening to see the participants' enthusiasm as they engaged with facts and stories about their organization's contributions to society. This interactive session underscored the role of quizzes as an effective tool for highlighting the impactful work of corporates in societal development. The event was a reminder of how entities can play a pivotal role in driving positive change, and how celebrating such milestones can reinvigorate our collective commitment to societal progress. Let's take a moment to appreciate the monumental efforts of organizations like the A.M.M. Foundation that strive to make a difference every day. The resource is a toolkit on how to give feedback, managing discomfort, how to listen, how to say no and when to say yes. Having Challenging Conversations, which features learnings from our new book Building Inclusion, is for architecture students who face working cultures which don’t align with their values and are experiencing behaviours which are not conducive to getting the best out of them. The resource empowers you to call-out and call-in these behaviours, in a constructive way, so those responsible can take responsibility, and those receiving can manage their way forward. According to Harvard Kennedy School’s Iris Bohnet, U.S. companies spend roughly $8 billion a year on DEI training — but accomplish remarkably little. This is the reality for many Australians living in the rural areas, who needed access to mental-healthcare services.   Hello everyone! My name is Rachel Hardjasaputra, a 2nd year commerce student with keen interest in creating positive impact to the community. As part of the COMM2501 Project Assignment, we are challenged to solve large-scale problems globally and present innovative solutions for it. To me, mental-health has been one issue that many people around the world could relate. It is even worst when a lot of Australians who are living in the rural areas are suffering alone with such issues, just because they live far away from the best available mental-health clinics in their country. With this, I challenged myself to take on this issue and dive in deeper on ways we could help more Aussies in getting the help they needed for their mental-wellbeing.   Overall, COMM2501 has allowed me to unlock interesting insights on how to deliver a good pitch supported with data visualizations. One lesson I value most is the importance of how we design our visuals to communicate our insights to the audience. Have I not taken this course, I would not notice the different thoughts and considerations needed to be put when choosing every elements that we would like to give for our plots. Essentially, the course have helped me to grow my presentation skills and ability to plot appropriate data to support my arguments. I hope to see more of such skills being used in my future work-integrated learning courses and in my career as a successful business woman.   With this, I would like to extend my gratitude for Dr. Poon Leung, my tutor Alireza Ghaffarian, the guest lecturer Dr. Khimji Vaghjiani, and fellow students in my group during tutorials and lectures for supporting me through this journey and inspiring me to grow as a data-visualization presenter. I look forward to the future in being able to have similar projects and creating more positive impact to the public 🌎 ✨ 📝 Self-Assessment: Overall, I would rate my performance as 7.8/10.
