Importance of Stakeholders in Achieving a Just Transition 🌟 Creating a comprehensive and equitable Just Transition requires the active involvement of concerned, interested, and affected stakeholders. These stakeholders play a pivotal role in shaping policies, fostering discussions, and providing practical insights that guide the transition towards a more just and sustainable future. 🔍 Stakeholder Mapping: After a recent Just Transition conference, the Just Transition Research Group (JTRG) conducted a stakeholder mapping exercise. We identified and grouped stakeholders into several categories, including research institutes, workers, communities, civil society organisations, state agencies, international agencies, and the private sector. 👥 Key Stakeholder Groups: > Workers: Vulnerable during a low-carbon transition, including workers and farmers is central to Just Transition. > Communities: Both rural and urban communities, including peatland, midland, and farming communities, require support and engagement. > Civil Society Organisations: Participation and engagement across civil society is vital to understanding contexts and developing appropriate solutions. > State Agencies: National government departments, regional governance bodies, and state-owned companies have significant roles to play. > International Agencies: Concerned with climate change effects and global workers, international agencies are influencing a Just Transition through funding mobilisation, advocacy, and communication. > Private Sector: Including industry, investment firms, and energy companies, the private sector can contribute by providing funds for Just Transition strategies. > Corporations: Internal corporate structures have a substantial impact on sustainability and social justice efforts. > Research Institutes: Universities, colleges, national research institutes, and research centers generate knowledge, debate, discussions, policy suggestions, and practical examples for a Just Transition to inform just and equitable policies. 🤝 Stakeholder Positionality: It's crucial to recognise that conflicts and power imbalances can arise among stakeholders. Not all stakeholders share the same level of concern for implementing a Just Transition. For some, it's about financial sustainability, while for others, it's a matter of livelihoods and well-being. Additionally, not all stakeholders prioritise a Just Transition in their mission. Therefore, managing and influencing stakeholders should consider both their positionality and their aims and goals to achieve a true and inclusive Just Transition. In summary, stakeholders are the driving force behind a Just Transition. While trying to understand SDG’s I realized that it is much easier if we take the 5P approach. In the pursuit of a more sustainable future, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a roadmap for global action. To effectively address the complex challenges facing our world, it's crucial to understand the Five P's of SDGs: 1. People -> Because let’s accept, it is us who made the mess, so it should be us who cleans/repairs/amends it. At the heart of sustainable development are people. The SDGs aim to improve the lives of all individuals, ensuring access to quality education, healthcare, clean water, and sanitation. By prioritizing people, we can create inclusive societies where no one is left behind. 2. Planet -> Because we have only one so far (until some billionaire finds another). Protecting our planet is essential for long-term sustainability. The SDGs emphasize the need to conserve and sustainably manage our natural resources, including land, water, and biodiversity. By promoting responsible consumption and production, we can mitigate climate change and preserve ecosystems for future generations. 3. Prosperity (श्री) -> Economics drive the world and mindset of people. Economic prosperity is intertwined with sustainable development. The SDGs seek to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth, creating opportunities for all while reducing inequalities. By promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and decent work, we can build resilient economies that benefit everyone. 4. Peace -> Not the one felt after morning yoga. Peace and stability are fundamental for sustainable development. The SDGs advocate for peaceful and inclusive societies, free from violence and conflict. By promoting justice, equality, and the rule of law, we can create environments where individuals can thrive and contribute to sustainable development. 5. Partnerships -> Because alone you can walk fast but not far. Collaboration is key to achieving the SDGs. The goals require collective action from governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals. By forging partnerships and leveraging diverse expertise, we can accelerate progress towards a more sustainable and equitable world. The Five P's of SDGs provide a holistic framework for addressing the interconnected challenges of sustainable development. The Social Value 2032 programme aims to demonstrate the importance of social value, engage with government decision makers and leading businesses, and cover all public sector procurement. It also seeks to influence the spending of the UK's largest companies and promote social value as a tool to shape markets and organisational behavior. Yesterday, I attended the Anthropy UK event launching their 2020 Insights Report. The report identifies eight priorities that can have the most impact towards achieving a more positive, sustainable, equitable, and successful UK. These priorities include children and young people, investment in public health services, economic prosperity, cross-sector collaboration, climate change and natural places, educational reform, addressing inequality, and political and electoral reform. It was great to meet and hear from like-minded individuals.
