It could be to protect landscape. Far too often drivers take lazy turns, when adequate space exists, and destroy thousands of dollars in landscape.
Other times architects have zero clue what it takes to turn a class 8 truck.

On this day 17 of 30 #whyrivercruising , I thought I’d share a little about cabin categories on a river cruise ship.
The entry level or lead in category (I.e., the most economical) is called a “fixed window.”
What is a “fixed window” cabin on a river cruise?
The fixed windows cabins are on the lower deck (and note, elevators don’t always go to the lower floor).
Fixed window cabins have a window that is 4.5’ - 5’ off the ground.
An entry level, or fixed window, cabin has a window that lets in light, but the window does not open. So, there is no fresh air access.
Given the height of the window from the ground, you have to stand up to look out the window, and it’s a little like having a basement window in your house (although a river cruise fixed window is about 5’ off the ground, while a basement window might be 7’ off the ground.)
This fixed window cabin category is sometimes called a “swan view” because when you look out the window (standing up), you are looking at the water level- so if there are swans on the river, you will see them go by.
With a fixed window cabin, when you stand up, you are looking out at the water, but when you lie in bed, you are lying underneath the water line.
The attached reel shows video of a fixed window on the Ama Magna, as we are “double docked” (tied up) to another ship; as well as a fixed window on the Scenic Amber, when we are not tied up to another ship.
Let me know if you have any questions.

In this video presentation, I make the case that revitalization of existing cruise ships is impactful.
Before going over my points, make sure to subscribe to my page. If you find the video informative, make sure to like!
1) During the Covid pandemic, the cruise ship industry went into a severe disruption of people not wanting to go on cruises out of fear of the spreadof corona virus. As a result ships were being deemed as non usable and taken to land fill trash sites to be demolished and have their materials of value extracted for recycling. This posed negatively on the future of cruising.
2) Older ships can be characterized as having outdated designs evoking a stylistic trend of an earlier time period. Older ships have a thematic design aesthetic meaning much of the design takes cues from stylistic periods like beaux arts, rococo and several references to other traditional styles. This can be a characterize as garish and excessive almost drawing you back to the interiors at a Cheesecake factory.
3) A major turning point occurred when Cruise ship companies developed their own in house product development and marketing departments. These departments have made revitalizations as an experimentation of design branding ie developing a concept and idea of design as opposed to doing something thematic. What ultimately emerged is the rise of the design concept as the guiding principle. In one example a cruise line wanted to increase revenue so they went into revitalizing a pool deck which drew many guests. The atmosphere was stimulating and fun and it increased sales of alcohol and liquor.
4) While revitalizations require an extensive amount of time, planning and review design progress, the actual construction is far less than building a new ship from scratch. Constructions for revitalizations on drydocks run from 2 – 4 months happening at an aggressive pace. Some of the newer high tech cruise ships of today were planned and built in 10 years.
5) As revitalizations can prove to be financially positive, it also evokes another theme and that the recycling of older ships and not sending them to be demolished is a positive move. This can be seen with the rise of smaller vessels like Jimmy Buffett’s cruise line Margaritaville at the Sea. It has employed the idea of branding of what you would normally see in Margaritaville hotel into a moving vessel. 30 year old ships were revitalized for this new brand and the cruises are quite modest ranging from 1 – 3 nights. With new players entering the ship market, one has more options on cruising from something high to low. This brings about variety and diversity into the cruise ship markets. Reviews of this ship on Cruise Critic have been positive. The cruise line is constantly updating their services and a new vessel is in the making.

Hilton x Autocamp: A Case Study
Hilton has announced plans to introduce AutoCamp’s luxury outdoor travel experiences to its iconic portfolio. For boutique hospitality brands, this is a prime case study on the power of intellectual property protections.
Founded in 2013, Autocamp has scaled its collection of high-end Airstream resorts and upscale campsites across multiple markets. As the article notes, Autocamp "curated a memorable travel experience" by blending modern design, premium amenities, and an eco-conscious ethos. (I’ve stayed at an Autocamp site - it was beautiful and so thoughtfully designed)
While I obviously don’t know the specifics of the deal, I can only guess that Autocamp's trademark assets and brand IP allowed them to negotiate from a position of strength. A quick search on the trademark database confirmed that Autocamp has secured federal trademark registrations covering their core name, a few slogans, and various logos/designs.
This partnership highlights how proactively securing trademarks and other IP is so important for emerging #hospitality brands. Protected brand assets increasingly function as legal currency, enabling upstarts to join forces with established leaders in the industry.
Autocamp demonstrated how trademarks open doors to strategic opportunities.
