Sitting next to a high performer makes you better. It used to be that when you started a new sales role, you sat next to someone doing the same job. Learning from your neighbor was the best part of onboarding. If you were lucky enough to sit next to a high performer, you received the best onboarding of your career. “I would listen to John’s calls and learn more from observing than any training,” said any salesperson who ever sat next to a high performer. According to a study by the Kellogg School of Management, “sitting near high performers boosted performance in coworkers by 15 percent.” This is called the spillover factor. Unfortunately, starting a new role now is a 100% remote experience for most sellers. The typical onboarding is done via video conferencing, listening to calls, and reviewing endless collateral. I feel for anyone having to go through virtual onboarding, followed by a lack of ongoing mentoring. For those looking for better onboarding and ongoing support, there are a few options to consider. 1) If you’re 100% remote now, ask to visit HQ or a regional office at least 1x per Quarter. 2) Seek out a mentor, internally or externally, and meet 2x per month. 3) Invest in professional and career development; this is a benefit your company should reimburse you for. 4) Join a community If you’re in Raleigh Durham area, please join us a Sale HQ a coselling community for high performing sellers and sales team.
