In the immortal words of Bon Jovi - “Woah, we’re halfway there…” Halfway through my secondment with Poppyscotland and what a four months it has been. Over those months, there have been many, many, many day… I’ve distilled them into one of the five different types. 1️⃣ a school day: with new areas of IG to learn about (enjoying raffles and regular giving), and reshaping my love of legacies. New techniques for DM, and different ways of working. 2️⃣ a planning day: planning my time to ensure that I can fit it all that is important, and moving aside the bits which I have absolutely ability to change or impact. 3️⃣ a reflection day: talking with those in my network about what I’ve learned, what’s gone well, what hasn’t, and what would I do differently next time… 4️⃣ a prioritising day: understanding that my priorities, really aren’t everyone else’s priorities, and that their priorities really aren’t mine too. With a little caring and sharing still gets the job done! 5️⃣ a “not today Satan” day. Enough said. I’m looking forward to a few more types of days, as I move into months 5, 6, 7 and 8 - there’s a another song on there somewhere….

Today is World Compliment Day. Did you know that every day is a compliment day at Gumption? Appreciation makes everyone happy. That's why we came up with 4 kudos cards. Gumpliment cards, we call them. We use them to thank or surprise a colleague because we learned a lot from him or her. Or because of their discretion, reliability, customer orientation, perseverance, helpfulness, initiative, empathy, innovativeness, leadership, problem-solving ability, effective approach, and team spirit, ... Not just today, on Compliment Day, but every day of the year. "At Gumption, we identify areas for improvement, but also acknowledge what is going well," says managing partner Liene De Bie. "In the workplace, we often assume that people know we appreciate them, but that's not always the case. Nothing beats a sincere thank you. We like to emphasize that with these cards." Want to give out a compliment to someone? You will find Gumpliment cards at the reception desk of every Gumption office! #compliment #complimentday #companyculture #companyvalues #cocreation

April 18, 2024 A day that lives rent free in the hearts and minds of millions… My dear friend Tony (Named Man) Militello reminded me that yesterday was officially National High Five ✋🏾 Day. National High Five Day is a reminder that every little success in life deserves a bit of celebration, and the high five serves as a universal form of just that - celebration. Here are five fun facts everyone should know about the High Five: 1. The origin story of the high five is up for debate, but most sophisticated scholars (I’ll self select into this category if I may) believe it originated on October 2, 1977 in downtown Los Angeles 2. Research indicates that sports teams who give the most high fives have increased performance and win a significantly higher percentage of games 3. Cats that are trained to give high fives are more adoptable (but we all know that the most adoptable cats are those who act like dogs (so we’re clear) 4. The high five is officially a universal gesture. People on every continent are doing it. In fact, one gentleman, Craig Lewis actually quit his job to high five the world. He traveled to 36 countries, high fiving his way through them all 👋🏽 5. The path to a perfect high five (thank you Keith Mercurio) is to look at the other person’s elbow So, if you’re having an excellent week… A few well executed high fives today will make it even better. If you’re having an average week… A few energy generating high fives will help you (and others) close the week on a high note. And if you’ve had “one of those weeks.” So has someone else. They might just need a high five (and a hug) as much as anything today. The brilliance of the high five, like so many other things. Is that the getting is in the giving. So give away. Because someone else might need a little celebrating, a bit of encouragement more than you know. Shoutout Stacie Clark for celebrating and encouraging so many others daily 👊🏽

S and D Oyster Company Recently, I took my wife, Alice, to the S and D Oyster Company in Dallas. It is one of her favorites and, as such, I always make it part of her birthday month package. As we entered the double front doors, a lady with a big smile and sparkling eyes, held the door for us. (Alice is on a walker for balance and I am recovering from a broken back - so we appreciated the help.) When we were seated it turned out that the same lady (Dina we were to discover) was our waitress. As she came to the table, she had that same warm smile and attitude and she maintained that disposition with prompt, courteous, and competent service during our extended stay. We knew from her welcoming smile that we were going to be well attended, and we were. We told her that her approach to her job personified our book we wrote on great service, particularly the sub-title. “At Your Service - The Faces of Service” Available at https://lnkd.in/eJR2evi Here is info on the book. ——————————— AT YOUR SERVICE - THE FACES OF SERVICE We all know when we get good service and when we get bad service, but how do we achieve Great Service in our business, our clubs, our civic organizations, or wherever? That ‘how’ is the subject of this book written by Alice and Clif Holliday. The material is based on their combined 80+ years of providing service in various organizations and circumstances. Real life examples are used to make the points less abstract, and an in-depth ‘how-to’ section is included.

Are you supporting your team's specialties? Last night, we celebrated our daughter's best friend's 5th birthday with a family dinner. As the table was set and the food laid out, there was a buzz of excitement. The 'favorite' family dish, lovingly prepared by our friend's mother, was about to make its appearance. Not only was it delicious, but we also got a take-home bag at the end of the night! This experience made me think about the unique specialties each team member brings to the table. How do we best support them in showcasing these strengths? Much like that favored dish, our work methods are a blend of ingredients and processes. When these are harnessed by a specialist and shared with the team, we ensure that their valuable contributions are savored and appreciated long into the future. So, I'm curious: What unique 'specialty' does each member of your team bring to the table, and how are you nurturing these talents?

Spotlight on Tracy Wilson! ⚡️ Tracy is our managing paralegal and we couldn’t do what we do without her. So, we thought we’d ask Tracy some fun questions to help you get to know her better. 1. What are some of your favorite activities or hobbies? Hobbies are all things Star Wars (Han shot first), collecting craft supplies (one day it will be doing the crafts too!), following the James Webb Space Telescope and the wonderful scientists who explain it all, cinema (all types from animation to black and white musicals to comic book blockbusters - no snobbery here), reading, and gardening. 2. Where is your favorite place you've traveled? Favorite kind of travel/vacation is anything that is either educational or amusement/adventurous. 3. What was your first job? Taco Bell in High School. When I was too perky for the opening crew, I would be locked in the walk in freezer. My store also created an entirely new job title (90's corporate - no discretionary raises) and I was officially named the "hospitality hostess" with that on my name tag. 4. What is a random fact about you? Mr. Pibb is not an alternative to Dr. Pepper. If I'm offered Mr. Pibb in place of Dr. Pepper, I politely decline and take water instead and it really confuses people. John Green articulates better than I can https://lnkd.in/dcdNgXKn Do you have anything in common with Tracy?

Friday gratitude: care and attention. Human rights are inherent to everyone, irrespective of who we are, where we live in the world, or which languages we speak. The human rights principles that I refer to in my training are the FREDA principles of fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy. Humans love to feel cared for. When it comes to relationships -professional or personal - care and attention fosters loyalty, an ongoing emotional relationship which arises from positive experiences. It works to build trust. Grantley Hall offers care and attention by the bucket load through exceptional customer care, so it was the obvious choice when putting together my dad's 90th birthday experience. From being escorted in with umbrellas on arrival, to the attention to our fine dining experience in a private room, to the hotel tour and golf buggy grounds tour, my dad felt like the king he is. Loyalty needs care and attention in itself. Gaining and maintaining people's loyalty takes ongoing commitment. Trust, which takes a long time to build, can be quickly broken and is difficult to repair. As we head into the weekend, I invite you to reflect on your professional relationships and what you've done to show the people in your spheres of influence due care and attention. Image description: Standing in front of Grantley Hall feeling happy at the end of a magical day with family. #loyalty #trust

Everyone remembered the Nilla Wafers and taco nights. Had the honor of attending a celebration of life for a 99- and 103-year-old couple who passed within a year of one another. As I didn’t know the couple well, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the service or to be as deeply moved as I was by the stories that were shared. I was struck by how much of my time I spend thinking about things that won’t make much of a difference in the impact I make during my short time here. As I think about the legacy I leave, I will look to Marg and Lloyd for the example they set. My takeaways: • What their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren remembered most was their love, the way they lived their lives, and how they treated others. • Memories were mostly about quality time spent with family (often over tacos and Nilla wafers). Traditions matter. • What they said mattered much less than what they did. How does this relate to my approach to work and life? • The relationships I build along the way are worth far more than the title or the paycheck. • The traditions we create don’t have to be Instaworthy, they just have to be real. • The moments matter. Between coworkers, friends and families. Take the time, make the connections. Everyone wins.
