Q1 2024 PitchBook-NVCA report continues to show a venture capital market that is on the defensive. Where initial impacts were felt by growth stage companies in 2023, the early stage is now experiencing visible pressures on funding activity. This dynamic continues to preference companies proven teams able to generate traction cost-efficiently. Report linked below. Let me just pull out two important implications from the current market dynamic which I care a lot about: 1. Venture capital firms are taking less risk than in the boom times. While there are aspects of this which are perhaps healthy, there are also aspects of this which are less so. As VC research Josh Lerner found, "We find that the implications for innovation are not benign: innovation conducted by VC-backed firms in recessions is less highly cited, less original, less general, and less closely related to fundamental science. These effects are more pronounced for startups financed by early-stage venture funds. Given the important role that VC plays in financing breakthrough innovations in the economy, our findings have implications for the broader discussion on the nature of innovation across business cycles." If we look at the opportunities in health, climate, security & resiliency - we we will need the VC risk appetite to return. 2. Funding for female founders is again down; while the PitchBook report doesn't specifically call out founders of color, I am certain the stats are as depressing. Without a doubt the "retreat to safety" is a retreat to "similarity." This is something I wrote about in 2020 and requires continued attention by venture capitalists committed to finding the best ideas. https://lnkd.in/emc2SWYJ https://lnkd.in/eFsA4d8J

Author I 'Vision-2-Impact' Entrepreneur I 'Industrializing Innovation' I Global Business Leader I Board Chairman - ACCURE Inc. I Founder, Open Range Capital Partners (new gen of mixed-use CRE - Innovation Infrastructure)
It is time that Venture Capital undergoes some fundamental, and tectonic cultural shift to create a new world of value creation. The existing models have lived their life. #VentureCapital community must revisit and focus on understanding REPEATABILITY of commercializing innovation. A repeatable process would de-risk all the time and will reshape the startup world to unleash total potential of all the people. Instead of merely targeting specific ROI ("one way or other - or its obsession for unicorns - enabled by large markets - and hedging the risk everywhere else"), our understanding of the 'repeatability to the startup success' process will give much better ROIs. And the prosperity would be a lot more inclusive. VC world cannot continue to live in an echo chamber of denial that they are doing fine. The hard question is: - Why the VC investment has to continue to be a "hit or a miss" model? Still, a random walk in the forest. How come a successful entrepreneur with a great EXIT (and everyone starts treating them like a God and everything he or she says is gospel) may fail during his or hers next Startup? Why?? I think, "Understanding patterns of success" is not enough, one must also understand the "anti-patterns" - small little things that lead to failures - at every step. Unfortunately, the success rates of VC Industry are not questioned because they make up ROI in a skewed way - 9 fail but 1 succeeds - that makes them look good. TRUTH IS: No one worries about how much of untapped value creation was wasted or left on the table. I think, this pure unicorn-driven metric and culture was perhaps OK 30 years back - because the risks were not rarely comprehensible or envisioned - but it does not have to be that way anymore. Our understanding of commercializing innovation has come a long way. WHY CAN'T WE INDUSTRIALIZE INNOVATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY JUST LIKE WE INDUSTRIALIZED MANUFACTRUING IN THE LAST 20TH CENTURY? IT IS DOABLE. The VC focus ought to include repeatable, sustained, long-term success for ALL and not just a few. How so ever small or big a market might be. Better ROIs. We must #INDUSTRIALIZE INNOVATION. There are opportunities to invest and commercialize for a good ROI in almost every walk of life. Investors would be drawn to startups that demonstrate not just "passionate founders" but "passionate founders with deep domain expertise - those who know that it is marathon and not a 100-meter sprint", demonstrate resilience, strong values and fundamentals, and a commitment to make positive impact. More attention needs to be directed toward local sectors and enabled by AI - areas that are not only ripe for innovation but have the potential to drive meaningful change across the world. The landscape is evolving, It’s an exciting time. It has the promise to clear any innovation logjam for want of capital. #VentureCapital #VCTrends #Startup #Commercialize Innovation #RepeatableStartupSuccesss #InnovationLogjam

Summary: U.S. venture capital firm General Catalyst has announced $8 billion in funds to invest in multi-sector early-stage startups globally, with a focus on U.S., Europe, and India. The firm has a specific interest in companies utilizing AI, defense and intelligence, climate and energy, industrials, healthcare, and fintech. Key takeaways: General Catalyst's latest funds are among the largest to emerge from a U.S. VC firm in recent years, showing the continued strength and growth of the venture capital industry. The firm is seeking to invest in companies that align with its core theses of applied AI, global resilience, and partnering with large companies to create new products. The expansion into Europe and India through mergers and partnerships highlights the firm's global growth strategy. Counter arguments: Some may argue that the large funds raised by General Catalyst and other VC firms could contribute to a potential tech bubble. There may be concerns about the firm's focus on embedding AI in existing industries, leading to potential job displacement. #venturecapital #vc #venture #startups
