Growing up, I was always the go-to person for organizing everything—birthdays, church gatherings, family outings, you name it. It felt so natural to me, almost like second nature. Even as I explored other career paths—most recently as a Business Analyst—events have always been where my heart is. 3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Corporate Event Management Business Starting a corporate event management business can feel like preparing for the biggest party of your life—until you realize you’re also the one making the playlist, ordering the food, sending the invites, and making sure the Wi-Fi works. Looking back, there are a few things I wish I had known before diving in headfirst. If you’re thinking of starting your own event planning business (or just want to laugh at my mistakes), here are the three lessons I learned the hard way: 1. Clients Will Always Want "One More Thing" Ah, the "one more thing" moment. It’s that magical phrase that signals everything you’ve planned is suddenly obsolete. If you’ve ever tried to manage corporate events, you’ll know what I mean: a client says, "Can we add a last-minute breakout session?" or "Could we have a pop-up sushi bar, but only if the sushi is hand-rolled by a renowned chef?" Don’t get me wrong, I love a challenge, but when you're already running on fumes, "one more thing" can be the thing that pushes you into full-on event-planning existential crisis and causes undo stress. 2. There’s No Such Thing as “Set It and Forget It” When I first started, I thought event planning was a series of well-organized to-do lists that you could check off, then relax. Turns out, that’s about as realistic as expecting a wedding cake to never fall over. Even with perfect planning, corporate events require constant, sometimes minute-by-minute, adjustments. From last-minute guest list changes to figuring out why the projector decided to take a nap mid-presentation, you’ll quickly learn that the “set it and forget it” mindset does not apply. You need to be on your toes, ready to adapt—and maybe carry some backup duct/gaff tape. 3. The Devil Is in the Details (And Also the Budget) When you start, it’s easy to focus on the fun stuff—cool themes, fancy décor, and impressing the boss. But as your business grows, you'll realize that the true key to success is managing the tiny details that are easy to overlook: the number of tablecloths, the logistics of a shuttle bus, or whether the coffee station is stocked with decaf (because trust me, someone will ask). But perhaps the most important detail of all? The budget. Spoiler alert: it’s always a little tighter than you expect. Be prepared to get creative without breaking the bank. Starting a corporate event management business is a wild ride. But even with the crazy moments and the “one more thing” requests, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing an event come together—and knowing that you, and your detailed spreadsheets, pulled it off. So, if you’re brave enough to take the plunge, just remember: be ready for anything, stay organized (and caffeinated), and most importantly, keep a good sense of humor. You’re going to need it!
