If you’re trading time, you’d better believe in what you’re doing… Yesterday evening I was sat at the airport waiting to board a flight out to Malta to catch up with the Mdina Partners team for a brilliant week of training, client work, planning and team bonding. I’d usually be wrapping up the weekend with the family, playing games with my boys and burning off the last of their energy before trying to get them to bed on time before school today. That time is everything to me. So as I’ve dialled in my personal and professional priorities, I’ve committed to doing everything I can to protect it. It means that when I trade, I have to be as sure as I can that it aligns with my values and aspirations. On average, adding not taking away. Luckily this week more than ticks the boxes. I’ll miss the family, but I’m grounded in my feeling of why. It’s not a perfect science, and it doesn’t always feel like life affords the flexibility. But try keeping this thought top of mind when you feel yourself being pulled in multiple direction. Sometimes it’s alright to say no. The world won’t stop, and you’ll keep yourself in the game. #coaching #leadership #priorities

It was great to join the team in Malta recently to record an episode of our ELEV8 @ Mdina Partners podcast (thanks as always Katrina Grech for being a wonderful host). A short and hopefully not too heavy exploration of 'change' - an ever-present subject that I'm obsessed with both on the individual and organisational level. Even better - sharing the platform with Steve Tarr, my mentor and our Founder, who over the 43 years since Mdina Partners was born has witnessed the tectonic plates shift several times. An added twist was that I didn't have a voice 48 hours prior to getting in the studio - thank you kids for the germ warfare. It's good to keep things challenging, right? Just about salvaged and thoroughly enjoyed. #ELEV8 #ELEV8Podcast #MdinaPartners #change

The future is bright. I found myself today in the privileged position of supporting a selection of Msc Management students at Leeds University Business School through a mock assessment centre and interview process as part of the Leaders in Residence programme. Tanya M. beautifully explains the process below and I second her take on the learning points. A brilliant opportunity for those who took time out to challenge themselves today - if only this kind of support existed when I was at the same point in life! Great stuff. As Leeds Uni alumni too, it was a poignant moment to find myself back here in a very different guise. Oh how life twists and turns. I truly hope the feedback given is taken and ran with as there is so much potential here to unlock. Well done everyone for showing up. #futureworkforce #management #unlockingpotential
Another impactful learning experience at Leeds University Business School... Today, I was part of a group of Leaders in Residence at the Business School where Louisa Hill and Emily Crosbie organised and hosted a mock assessment centre experience for MSc Management students. The students were tasked with an in-tray exercise with a view to them demonstrating skills in time management, leadership, facilitation, prioritisation and problem-solving. 6 students were selected for interview, after receiving our feedback on the in-tray exercise. Farakh Masood, John Honey, James Munton and I were largely unanimous in our feedback which stressed the importance of some foundational areas for development, such as teamwork, understanding and meeting the task requirements and time management, but the most significant was communication skills. When you think about the purpose of assessment centres, communication skills are a critical part of the evaluation process, providing insights into how candidates will perform in real-world scenarios, interact with colleagues and clients, and contribute to the organisation. It's often the first skill that's assessed, so demonstrating strong communication skills during an assessment is crucial for applicants. It creates a positive first impression and shows an ability to collaborate, solve problems, and maintain professionalism. This was the first mock assessment centre experience these students have had, and it was a fantastic opportunity to apply practical skills, which I'm sure they will go on to develop further. I hope that our feedback today was useful. It was honest, and sometimes, honest is not always what we want to hear. The flip side, however, is that when we receive feedback, we're empowered with knowledge and increased self-awareness to take steps toward improvement. The power of 1% better every day is real! So, to all students who took part today, well done. You know what you need to do! Thank you, as always, Emily Crosbie for the invitation to support this project.

Good trip down to the NEC for the Multimodal Exhibition As always: ✅️ great time catching up with clients ✅️ exciting new connections made Key takeaways from the day: ❌️ I'll never be an F1 driver ❌️ Or even a scalextric champion Gutted. But, you can't beat making time to get out and simply talk to real people, away from teams calls, away from email... it's amazing how productive it can be. Anyone else feel the same?

Is traditional leadership enough in today's relentlessly changing world? The landscape of work is rapidly evolving, and with it, our understanding of effective leadership. Traditional command-and-control approaches are giving way to more agile, empathetic, and collaborative strategies. Key shifts include: 1. From authority to autonomy - Inspiring rather than instructing. 2. From uniformity to diversity - Valuing different perspectives and skills. 3. From secrecy to transparency - Sharing information freely to empower teams. 4. From rigidity to adaptability - Being open to change and leading through uncertainty. 5. From individual achievement to collective success - Focusing on team over self. In a world that now demands flexibility, innovation, and (needed now more than ever) human-centricity, leaders must evolve or risk being left behind. Tough gig. That's what Mdina Partners is here to help with. Themes like this are covered on our Emerging Leaders and Experienced Leaders Development Programmes. Drop me a DM to find out how we can provide the support you need. #leadership #adaptable #eq

This year has kicked off at full steam. Whilst time some weeks has passed by in a blur and the pace has been high, I'm not complaining. Stacks of client work and equal amounts of graft behind the scenes. I love it. I'm not long back from Malta, my home from home, spending time with our brilliant team and attending the wonderfully thought-provoking Business Leaders Malta conference. We've recently moved into one of the best workspaces on the island, and it's a pleasure to visit and feel the energy and commitment of the team buzzing in this new space. I've a long history with this wonderful spot down in the central Med, but thankfully, since it's always sunny in Yorkshire, I won't be relocating... yet. #team #malta #mdinapartners

How do you grow a sport in an already sports mad city? Not my area of expertise, but I had the pleasure last week of listening to Warwick Andrews, Managing Director of the Leeds Knights ice hockey team describe his ambitious response to this very challenge. The journey of this team and its predecessor to date has been nothing short of a rollercoaster, taking in challenges to the construction of the building itself, then of course, the pandemic. Hearing about the entrepreneurial spirit and drive that exists there today and what they are striving for in the future is inspiring. I’ve no doubt I’ll be back soon cheering the team on with my boys. Well done Connect Yorkshire for hosting a great morning out. #leadership #ambition #connection

Cohesive teams can achieve great things. At Mdina Partners we love supporting teams to build foundations from which they can achieve real step-change. Last week we had the pleasure of working with a brilliant group at Yorkshire Building Society to do just this. The energy they brought was fantastic. When a team is ready and willing to do the work, potential multiplies. From understanding self through individual PRISM Brain Maps to how the behavioural preferences of the team map as a whole. We went deep into what this means for team dynamic, impact on communication and what understanding this means for future success. And of course, there's always a few games (for which I think this particular team are now the record holders!) A real privilege to spend time with this group. Superb effort 👏 #teamdevelopment #communication #leadershipdevelopment
