I don't encourage anyone to get an accounting degree it's a waste of time (maybe a slight exaggeration)! Instead AAT, ACCA or CIMA at college or online whilst working in the industry is the way to go. Gone are the days when a shiny degree was your golden ticket to career success. Now? It's all about what you can do, not just what you've studied. Skills are the new currency in the job market. 🛠️ I've seen it firsthand. Hired someone with no formal qualifications but skills that could put pros to shame. Changed my perspective entirely. It's not about the letters after your name; it's about what you bring to the table. I've also seen students when I taught accountancy fail exams but I would hire them any day over some of the first time passers. My study style changed as I progressed with my ACCA exams.😉 Truth is that studying as an unemployed student is different from studying as an employed student. The major difference is the availability of time. At this point let me just salute all the ACCA students who are full time workers; you rock!🙌🏾🙌🏾 When I first started my ACCA journey, I stopped working and focused solely on studying for my exams. I had plenty of time. I would go through the entire Kaplan text, topic by topic, taking the time to master each one.😅 However, as I moved on to the Professional level, I had to get a job because my Practical Experience Requirement (PER) required it. I started working at KTB Professionals, an accounting and audit firm. My boss was very understanding, but even though she gave me time to study, things were different from being an unemployed student.😊 As we got more clients at the office, I had to devote more time to work. This left me with less time for study, not to mention the fatigue. However, one thing remained the same; I had to pass my exams.😅 By this time, I had already figured out that the most important material for the ACCA exam was the exam kit. Truth is that at least 70% of the questions you will encounter in your exam already has its kind in the exam kit.😉 Since I did not have the time to go through the text bit by bit, I focused all my attention on the exam kit. I would look at a question, closely examine how it was answered, and then create a Word document with question excerpts and their answers.🙌🏾 This method worked perfectly for me. The evidence is that I never failed a Part 3 paper.😎 I wouldn't say this is the best way to study for everyone, but it was for me. It might not work as well for you if you try it. ACCA students hate me when I say this out loud, don't expect crazy salaries like Rs 10, 15, 20 lacs for your first job! You may have to start with salaries as low as 3 or 4 lacs, depending on what number of papers you're done with and if any prior experience. Now why do we get paid less? The answer is simple, we need to get experience before we start to demand. ACCA is a skill based profession (not knowledge) therefore you get better only with experience. And because you get better, you can demand more. Your ACCA qualification tells the employer that you have in depth knowledge, and you have gone through the grind therefore commitment can be expected.They know you can put in the efforts and won't quit. Please don't compare yourself with other qualifications like a CA getting 8 or 10 lacs as a start, cos they already have done a 3 years articleship which is as good as full time work experience. Therefore if you have 3 years experience, yes absolutely feel free to demand 10 lacs and more, if not, then please get some experience first. The initial few years are still part of investments, therefore the returns are not necessarily great (there are a few exceptions). However with a few years in the Industry, you'll be able to make a lot more than an average accounting and finance professional. Remember the power of compounding works here too! Realistic expectations would be an ACCA with zero experience to start with 6 to 6.5 lacs and then with experience it keeps going up gradually. With 5 to 7 years of work experience, you can expect it to go upto 20 odd lacs. Question… Throughout my 22 years as an entrepreneur at Accounts Navigator, I've had the privilege of working with many talented individuals. Two key insights I've gained are the in-depth knowledge provided by the AAT qualification and the significant value of practical experience in our field. When it comes to hiring, I often favor candidates with an AAT qualification over those holding traditional accounting and finance degrees. In my experience, AAT professionals typically possess a deeper understanding of day-to-day operations within an accounts practice, which translates to better performance in client work. However, I find it perplexing that after completing AAT Level 4, individuals receive only 3 exceptions towards their professional qualifications (such as ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW) while degree graduates often receive 6 or 7 exceptions and can label themselves as part-qualified, despite lacking that vital practical experience. 🤔 Can anyone help me understand the logic behind this? I truly believe that the combination of in-depth knowledge and practical experience gained through the AAT should carry more weight in assessing a candidate’s capabilities for chartered professional qualifications.
