𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲? A good old street fair 🎠🎡 In this episode of Room For Revenue, I visited the Normal Heights Street Fair! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝐭𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲: ➡️ Parking lots ➡️ The Taco Shop Theory ➡️ The Upsell during the pre-sale Did you know local community events like this not only help bring people into new communities but, can triple and even quadruple your city or venues revenue?! 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱-𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁? What themed event has generated your venue the most revenue? Just a heads-up: the views shared here are mine alone and not associated with the Normal Heights Street Fair. These are my opinions on where there is room for revenue at this particular location and not a reflection of other locations or the corporation. #roomforrevenue #sandiego #revenue #sales #hospitality

New York looks back on 400 years The beginning of the year marked the start of a year-long campaign ‘Founded in New York’ to celebrate the city’s 400th anniversary. Events across New York’s five boroughs will celebrate the city’s history, culture, and innovation, highlighting the achievements driven by New Yorkers. Driven by major city’s cultural and entertainment heavyweights, the campaign encourages locals and visitors to explore New York through off-line experiences (Link: https://lnkd.in/eTmDfksf). Campaign’s theme and slogan ‘Where innovation makes history’ may be well-justified and appropriately well-rounded, but one would have hoped for a more interesting theme than the ever-ubiqutous ‘history and modernity’ combo. That said, the introspective approach: what have we done and what it cost us (emotionally) may generate some deeper meaning and connection than your usual celebratory fanfare. Main Street Summit is less than 2 months away… you in? Main Street is organized like a festival with loads of simultaneous programming in venues around downtown, and multiple pass types. The team has been working hard to design the content to allow for you to go deep based on role or interest, or to be able to drop into a wide range of discussions. Choose your adventure. Last year I moderated one discussion where we went deep on shipping logistics and negotiation, and another on family governance and involving younger generations in the family biz (or not). This year, plans are in the works on everything from sale-leasebacks to franchise royalties to the impact of higher interest rates to improving internal communication, and a lot more. As with most things, it will be what you make of it. But I encourage you to make the trip to Columbia, Mo. this October and join hundreds of other operators, owners, investors, and advisors to build relationships and share lessons learned in the real world. It’s designed to be the rare combo of energizing, productive, and a damn good time. Passes are available here: https://lnkd.in/dqmEq-Sk Dates: October 8-10, 2024

When you attend a concert your review of the act may be impacted by where you sit. At the concert venue we attend in the summer, the sound system needs an upgrade, and we avoid certain sections. Exiting the concert, I hear people express different assessments of the artist based upon where they sat. In corporate life there is a pendulum that swings back and forth. In this case the weight at the bottom of the pivot moves between centralized and decentralized structures. My experience tells me that neither approach is superior and whenever the pain of the chosen path gets too uncomfortable the appeal of the other takes over. The two most common catalysts for the change are new management and poor performance, often in combination. I’ve seen both sides and I can tell you that my perspective on the alternatives depended greatly upon where I was sitting at the time. Whenever I instituted centralization, my rationale was always that a discipline expert at the home office could deliver more value than several park-located less experienced colleagues. When I joined Cedar Fair, I particularly believed this regarding marketing, with the need for CRM and on-line channels rapidly becoming a requirement. The same thing for revenue management, with dynamic pricing becoming a mainstay as well. I also took a portfolio look at the planned attractions additions. This is different than centralization as it involved significant input from the park leaders, with company priorities established by our executive team. This all made sense to me, but less so to those seated in the parks’ executive offices. To them it clearly felt like we were taking authority away from them. I tried to convince them that by doing this, they could focus more on what they did have control of, primarily the very significant day-to-day operation of the park. I never totally convinced them of the net benefit. When I was with WDW we had a matrix structure that meant very little wasn’t centralized. The breakthrough for me was having the opportunity to run new businesses where we were allowed to be more decentralized (maybe we weren’t important enough for turf disputes). I have always stated that the closer I got physically to the corporate office in Burbank the more challenging my job became. There was something truly wonderful about sailing south from Pt. Canaveral. When I got to Anaheim, I started to learn what my park presidents at Cedar Fair felt. After the 50th anniversary there was a move towards more centralization, and it was time for me to move on. Looking back, I worked hard to stop the pendulum in the middle. Swinging too much in either direction loses efficiency, effectiveness and, importantly, ownership. Remember my job was not to make everyone happy, it was to make everyone effective. Easy to see how, on this and most other topics, where you sit makes a difference. And, if you happen to be booking a ticket at an upstate NY concert venue, avoid Rear Sections 1 and 2.
