I’m positive that everyone who uses LinkedIn, Monster, Indeed, Zip-Recruiter, etc as a tool for locating employment has experienced a wave of eager recruiters messaging them daily about exciting new career opportunities. Great, right? Well it would be, if they were legitimate recruiters with valid jobs. I’d hate to estimate what the validity ratio is for actual job opportunities, (versus identity theft scams, and bait and switch), but it’s not a passing grade. Not by a long shot. I’m puzzled why LinkedIn (specifically) doesn’t investigate and remove these nefarious organizations. Maybe someone has the answer. I suspect it’s either bureaucratic inefficiency, or indifference. If I had a nickel for every text, email, or call I’ve received from ‘recruiters’ who feel I’m a great fit for the job they have, I’d be a wealthy man. (Spoiler, I’m not wealthy). 😂. The messages themselves are reasonable well written (probably AI) but when you speak to the person, they can barely speak English, and that lack of communication alone SHOULD send us all scrambling to hang up or block them. Sadly, it doesn’t. Most of us wouldn’t dream of revealing our personal or financial information to total strangers who just called us out of the blue in broken English and no caller ID, but before we wise up, they mention astronomical salary amounts. Once they bait the hook, all bets are off. It’s the same logic-sapping human greed which causes some people to become peniliess in Las Vegas. “Maybe it’s real!” (NOPE.) “But they have 5,000 followers on LinkedIn.” (So, they are clever scammers with a large network of accomplices). If it’s too good to be true, it’s NOT true… 😉 Here’s a link to the FTC fraud center. Fake recruiters are a scam that tries to take advantage of vulnerable job seekers. Major companies regularly receive reports of individuals who were deceived and then came to the actual company asking for refunds for their "Application fee". As a company, there isn't much you can do to prevent this other than to post a warning on your careers site that points out recruiter fraud signs in the hopes that the target looks and sees it before they're fully taken in. As a target, all the standard phishing warnings hold true: If they're blindly reaching out unsolicited via text or email, red flag. If there's weird formatting or spelling errors, red flag. If they want banking and passport information, 🚩 If they're sending from an email address that isn't the company's domain, red flag. If they ask for any money to refer you in, run.

🚩 Important Message for #Jobseekers: Beware of Fraudsters on LinkedIn! 🚨 Recently, there have been increasing reports of fraudsters exploiting LinkedIn to collect CVs and personal details from unsuspecting job seekers for fraudulent purposes. I myself narrowly escaped becoming a victim, as the fraudulent account vanished before I could complete my due diligence. This serves as a call to action to raise awareness about this concerning trend. If you are in the #unitedstates, exercise caution before sharing your social security details until you are fully onboarded and have verified the legitimacy of the company or recruitment firm. Similarly, in the #UK, scrutinise recruiters' profiles for red flags such as low follower counts or inconsistencies in their experiences. It's truly disheartening 🙁 to see fraudsters preying on vulnerable individuals who are simply trying to secure employment to support themselves and their families. #Jobseekers, please take extra precautions. The employment market may be challenging, but investing an additional 10-15 minutes in conducting due diligence can save you from potential heartache, wasted time, or even identity theft. I feel compelled to raise awareness and caution my fellow professionals against falling victim to these deceptive schemes. Recently, individuals posing as recruiters have been reaching out to unsuspecting candidates with enticing job offers. One red flag to watch out for is the use of the word "KINDLY" in their messages, followed by a request to send your resume via email, bypassing the secure communication channels provided by LinkedIn. These scammers claim to offer remote job positions and assure candidates that all communication and transactions will be conducted virtually via email. They may even go as far as to schedule an interview for when they return from a supposed business trip. However, the real danger lies in their insistence on payment methods that raise suspicion. They may propose sending a check to cover the cost of equipment and salary, with the expectation that the candidate will cash the check and use the funds to purchase equipment themselves. Let me be unequivocal: legitimate job opportunities do not operate in this manner. If a job is truly remote or virtual, payment and communication can and should be conducted securely through established platforms designed for virtual entrepreneurs. We must remain vigilant and discerning when it comes to job offers that seem too good to be true. If something feels off or raises doubts, trust your instincts and proceed with caution. Ignoring these deceptive offers is the best course of action to protect yourself and your personal information. It's a dawning of a new day in the modern job search. You can't assume the Internet streets are safe to roam if you're not proactively vigilant against job scammers. It's essential to question the legitimacy of every job ad. Not every employer is actively hiring; some may even post 'ghost jobs' to collect your data without your knowledge. Only recruiters can see it in private mode (Thanks, Barb Buckner, SHRM-CP, my old friend). Some say it helps as a deterrence, others not so much. What say you? 👉🏾 Charlotte Manly (https://lnkd.in/g39C9u6M) informed me on a recent post your State's Attorney General may not have jurisdiction (job scams are cybercrime): "United States only: Your state's Attorney General may not have jurisdiction. For cybercrime, report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): https://www.ic3.gov/ For business fraud or bad business practices or identity theft, whether or not internet-connected, report it to the FTC: https://lnkd.in/g3TmqPQg There is some overlap between the two because neither can handle reports of cybercrime. However, if you are not sure it is a US-based business or you do not know where it is located, report to IC3 rather than FTC. You do not need to have lost money to make a report." 👉🏾 If you've visited a fake job site, clicked an email link from a job scammer, or given any private data such as a bank, SS, or (lord forbid) a check routing number or credit card information, call the institution immediately. Don't think for a second it's a done deal. Scammers will try to charge again and again. They will also sell to other scammers trying to profit from your data. 👉🏾 Continuing from my last point, you're not done yet. Please run a virus, spyware, or malware scan on your computer or phone.
