How to #lead now... APPLE The next morning, Pepe woke up first. In all the surrounding grape residents dreamed still sweet. Pepe spread his carpet, glanced back one last time and smiled contentedly. Then he dashed off to look for the green button. (...to read the full blog, please click on the pic below) My key takeaways: 1. PERCEPTION DRIVES US. 2. CHECKING THE REAL IS SOMETIMES SCARY. 3. I failed my FIRST marketing plan pitch. 😰 It was my FIRST meeting as a marketing consultant with my FIRST client. Within 2 minutes of my pitch, the CEO of the startup had a pained look and instinctively started massaging the back of his neck. The first sign of stress. 💆♂️ I had the good sense to pull back immediately. I simplified the rest of my pitch. Thankfully, the CEO bought into my plan. 🙌 Here's what I didn't do before the meeting -- practice the pitch. If I had, then I would have thought of an opening, middle and end. I would have created a narrative flow for the pitch. I would have told the outcomes story of my marketing plan! You would think pitches and stories are child's play. Especially for a marketer with 2 decades of experience. Alas, it is not to be. This new-found awareness came from attending the "*Success Through Persuasive Storytelling*" course. In less than 2 weeks, the course created a deep sense of awareness about the stories I tell every day. I am now able to save sinking pitches. Hopefully, I'll never present one again. 😎 The legendary K. Srikrishna runs the "Success Through Persuasive Storytelling" course. Christmas 1995 was NOT a good time for Apple. Heck, all of '95 was not the best of times. The future of the company was hanging by the proverbial thread. In early 1996, Gil Amelio became the CEO of Apple. Over the previous five years Gil had led National Semiconductor, one of the pioneering chipmakers of Silicon Valley through a turnaround. Not an easy task, as the company had been run by the same CEO for the previous nearly 30 years, who back in 1981 had grown it to be the first semiconductor firm to achieve $1B dollar in sales, before stagnating And what Gil achieved at National was amazing—despite the previous 5 years of losses, a 25,000 strong global workforce and 30-year history with a single CEO posed unique challenges many anchored in culture. Through that entire period I’d worked at National including two years working for one of Gil’s direct reports. I admired the transformation he wrought articulating a clear vision, getting buy in for a change of culture all without wholesale firing of large numbers of folks. It was like turning an oil tanker around—slow, at times frustrating but he got it done. A few weeks after he took on the CEO role, Gil made a video intended to communicate his plan to set Apple on the road to good health. I recommend that you watch it before reading the rest of this post. Keep in mind, • Gil is an amazing leader with a proven track record of fixing companies • Apple has historically had strong marketing and PR folks. • This video is pre-recorded and not a live one. Despite this the video singularly fails to not only achieve its goals but likely unable to retain the viewer even for its full length. Why do you think this happened? Who is the audience for this video? What was Apple/Gil’s intent in making this video? What was his key message for the listener? Would #storytelling have worked better? Why? If so what sort of story would have Gil told? What story do you tell yourself every day? Is it a helpful one? Our lives all tell a story. Who we are Where we’re from Where we’re heading What we’re capable of achieving But those stories are often inherited from the beliefs of the people around us. The society or circumstances we grew up in. If we didn’t consciously choose our narrative - we set ourselves up to fail. We can feel shame and guilt for not achieving “success” even when it’s not what we wanted anyway. If we want to forge our own path, we really need to create our own story. To find what’s important to us and build a personal vision of what success looks like. We have to “Think Different” if we want to want to live an authentic life. And the people around you aren’t always going to agree with that. Around this time in 1984, Apple ran its iconic “Think Different” ad. It has one of my favourite lines from any ad I’ve ever seen: “While some may see them as the crazy ones - we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world - are the ones who do.” This ad has nothing to do with computers. It’s a promise. A vision. It’s one of the reasons I’m proud every time I open my MacBook in the morning. They’ve sold me on their vision by taking me on a journey. (A good example of Influence over Manipulation) Apple is one of the best at this - we can all learn from them. They’re inspiring us to action. Not only to buy their products but to change the story we tell ourselves daily. — If you content like this: Follow @Julien Fortuit and connect Tap the 🔔 on my profile Comment your thoughts below #apple #marketing #vision #storytelling https://lnkd.in/dB8B4sFk

Here is some Monday inspiration from Apple’s 1997 - “Here is to the crazy ones” commercial. “You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do it’s ignore them, because they change things, they push the human race forward”. ❤️ #thinkdifferent #inspiringmarketing #marketingcampaign https://lnkd.in/gK4fpyY8
