The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. During a Partner Insights session, one of our summer interns, Aiden, asked David M. Kaplan, C.P.A., "How did you decide that BRC was the right sized firm, given the options of larger or smaller firms?" Here is David's Response:

Thank you to all of the employers and government organizations hosting summer interns, program participants, and mentees. We know that you are serving as a mentor, role model, nurturer, parental figure in some cases, career counselor, and most importantly, a listener. As you support our youth and young adults this summer, know that they may reach out to you for support throughout the year. In some instances, you may be their only support within reach. Whether you believe it or not, what you represent and who you are (even when you are still developing) is more of a witness to greatness than you think. Know that you are a model of success, a model of courage, and a model of encouragement to those learning in the summer employment programming spaces. Keep walking with your head high and be unapologetically committed to supporting each of them. They deserve our best and to know when even we have to reset. Allow them to see the real side of work, how culture strengthens relationships, and how leaders grow when they support every part of the organization. Let them see you.

When you get to work with your own daughter... Sure, I've seen my daughter Chase Carpenter in action. I've seen how her smile and positive energy can draw people in. I've watched her rally groups of young women, whether it's for pure fun and community development, or it's for a purpose-driven event, meant to move the needle. She's an organized, efficient, and magnetic leader. So you may imagine my pride getting to work alongside her this past summer at The Lola. The Lola is a vibrant, women's community space where I've been co-working for the past year and a half. I've also contributed some work to The LOLA team, helping Dana Xavier Dojnik with project management processes and content marketing; starting and co-leading a weekly accountability group with Melissa Uppelschoten, now led by superstar Qiana Avery, SHRM-CP; and co-facilitating the monthly, in-person Founders & Freelancers group with the incomparable energy-shifter Kafi London. In short, being part of The LOLA community has been my jam. When The LOLA accepted Chase as an intern last spring, I knew she'd fit right in. She understood the assignment: to help support the powerful network of inclusive, female entrepreneurs and women in business who want to build a life and career in which we are constantly growing, thriving and succeeding. It's exciting to see young women realize and embrace their own power. It makes me wish I knew what they already know when I was in my 20s! But it was a different time and we were ALL different people. :) I'm excited to keep my focus on what's ahead for all of us. Because women - young, mid-life and wise - will change the world. I spoke with Peter Khalil and Milton Dick MP at the morning tea for interns participating in the Australian National Internships Program. This semester, I am writing an economic research paper on the housing crisis. Since Y2K, housing supply has not kept up with rising demand. House prices have gone up twice as fast as incomes. The 'bank of mum and dad' now defines the financial future of young Australians. My paper focuses on improving the planning system to increase the supply and density of housing in Australia's cities.

Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities. Have agility and adaptability. That's the future; things change fast." - Kaul-Hottinger "At a company like ours, you can start in one place and follow a passion to other places that might feed a curiosity or help with your professional development... Challenge yourself and chase your passions. It's all fuel for a career." - Halvorson "Try different experiences to help you figure out what you like and if the company is where you'd want to grow your career. Always be learning and meeting people." - Dusek "There's always cycles in business, good and bad. Be known as a person that leans in, asking ‘How can I help?' People will remember those tough times and how you showed up as a leader to help." - Smith #CHSIncIntern

I should add that these are PAID internships. Not only does this make our internships accessible to those who can’t afford to work for free, there is a noticeable difference in the quality and consistency of their work over the span of the semester. It is a lot easier to give more to an organization when they are compensating you for your time. At the very least, I believe we need to be paying interns enough to cover the indirect expenses that come with a job (gas, meals, clothing, etc.).
