This means you, your child, your pet, or non-target species like the endangered Canadian Lynx can also be painfully caught up in these traps. The Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act has been reintroduced in the US and will ban the use of these cruel traps on all refuges. Free Learning Opportunity: Exploring Animal Welfare Legislation in Saskatchewan Webinar Series Topic: Captive Wildlife Regulations Presenters: Ffion Cassidy, Wildlife Ecologist, Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Bonnie Dell, Executive Director, Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, and Megan Lawrence, Director, Salthaven West Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 1:00 PM SK Time Ffion Cassidy will discuss The Captive Wildlife Regulations, 2021, including explaining how they help protect native wildlife and ecosystems, maintain public health and safety, and ensure the welfare of animals in captivity. Saskatchewan updated these regulations in 2021 to modernize and strengthen its approach to native and exotic captive wildlife. Ffion will outline the process used to determine the species that may be held for personal possession and provide information on Allowed and Restricted species. She will also discuss the purposes for which captive wildlife permits may be issued (zoos, falconry, wildlife rehabilitation, upland gamebirds and scientific research) and how these requirements have been updated. WRSOS will discuss the new Saskatchewan Captive Wildlife Regulations, introduced in 2021. We will highlight examples of calls received to the provincial helpline of wildlife being held illegally and talk about what the public should do to help wildlife instead. Today, 6 July, is World Zoonoses Day. Health and wildlife experts have warned us for decades of the public health risks associated with people mixing with wild animals, including through habitat destruction, illegal, unregulated or poorly regulated wildlife trade, markets and consumption.  But let’s never forget, that, when left alone, wild animals pose no risk to human health; the risk comes from how we, as people, interact with wildlife. And that’s something we can manage, but do we? No, we don’t adequately regulate these interactions. Our system is not orientated toward preventing the next pandemic. That’s why, in June 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime was created to, inter alia, encourage States to fill serious gaps in international and national law by advocating for and offering technical support towards: - the inclusion of public health and animal health criteria in relevant international conventions and processes, including through the development and implementation of a robust Pandemic Agreement, and - the adoption of measures at national level to minimise the risk of pathogen spillover at source (primary prevention). The Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime is supporting the negotiation of a Pandemics Instrument. The deadline for negotiations was recently extended by the World Health Assembly to May 2025. 🦏🌍 Happy World Rhino Day! 🌍🦏 Today, I want to shed light on a crucial aspect of rhino conservation - rhino dehorning. Thanks to an incredible experience with Loop Abroad and Wildscapes Veterinary and Conservation Services, I got a glimpse into the dedication it takes to protect these magnificent creatures. 🔵 Why is rhino dehorning important? 🔵 🌿 Preserving Life: Rhino horns are often targeted by poachers, driving these animals to the brink of extinction. Dehorning reduces their appeal in the illegal wildlife trade, safeguarding rhino populations. 🦏 Ethical Conservation: Dehorning is a humane alternative to protect rhinos, as it doesn’t harm them. It’s a temporary measure to deter poachers, ensuring the long-term survival of the species. 🌍 Community Engagement: Initiatives like Loop Abroad bring together passionate individuals to work on the ground, raising necessary funding and fostering local awareness and support for rhino conservation. Raccoons have been having a moment on social media often shown as pets or being "rehabilitated" by untrained individuals. These videos harmfully misrepresent proper wildlife care and complicate the work of licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators. Raccoons are very charismatic and have big personalities; they are passionate about food, curious about the world around them, and sometimes too clever for their own good. These traits easily win the finder of a raccoon over and can trigger their empathy and nurturing instinct. Wildlife rehabilitators rely on this empathy because they do not have the staffing needed to pick up animals and instead need the finders to bring the animals to them for care. However, sometimes a finder becomes too attached to the raccoon they have found, and they try and care for the raccoon themselves. Raccoons that are raised by the finder are often malnourished, have gastrointestinal issues, become too comfortable around people, and do not learn the necessary skills to survive back in the wild. Much of the information found online about raising a raccoon is inaccurate and does not come from Wildlife Rehabilitators. Wild animals that are too comfortable around humans are at risk of getting into an altercation with a pet, getting hit by a car, or becoming a nuisance animal. Raccoons, even baby raccoons, can carry diseases and parasites dangerous to humans and pets. These can be spread through bites, scratches, or handling things the animal has touched. Never handle an animal without gloves! Raccoons are protected under the law; in many states it is illegal to keep or raise them without the proper permits and licenses. Each state provides a list of licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators on their Fish & Wildlife website. It takes a lot of training and experience to become a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator so you can trust that they are going to do what is best for each animal. If you come across a raccoon that you believe may be injured and/or orphaned, please contact your closest Wildlife Rehabilitator. Culling/removal of invasive species is usually encouraged when it comes to plants, some fish (e.g. Lionfish), boa constrictors in the FL Everglades, and invertebrates like Zebra mussels. Therefore, it's understandable that the US Fish and Wildlife Service would make a proposal that a similar approach is used for the owls. However, I'm not sure how successful the strategy would be for this issue, or what feasible alternative solutions animal rights groups are proposing, beyond just objecting to the Fish & Wildlife plan. ://https://lnkd.in/g7DtsGNF

Headtorches, bicycles, wellingtons, thermometers, gloves and UV light meters.. These are just some of the items on our wishlist for our proposed new collaboration with the Ghanaian Wildlife Division, in a quest to find out what is happening to turtles who are washing up dead and dying on beaches just south of the capital Accra. On his last visit, Matthew Rendle RVN counted no less than twelve dead turtles in just a short stretch of beach, but it’s not clear why they are getting into trouble. The equipment will be used in the first stage of the project, to collect data on the exact location, orientation and condition of stranded turtles. Other aspects of the project will include encouraging local communities to buy into turtle conservation and beach cleaning, holding a turtle first aid workshop, and the ultimate goal of establishing a small but comprehensive turtle rescue centre.
