A week in our lives as volunteers! 🐠 🌊 Each week consists of a 6-day workweek. Around 3 to 4 in water surveys on a local boat, where we are on the lookout for signs, such as tuna present, to further investigate if a whaleshark is present. If one is present, we will enter the water and try to photo ID the shark and note down all data on a slate on the boat. If other megafauna is present, we will also further investigate. Back on land we will process all photos and data into a database. 1 to 2 days each week we will have land duty, going through social media platforms and photos sent in by citizens and ID the sharks using a database (much like fingerprint analysis). Noting down all corresponding data to create a better understanding of its habitat and aggregation. 1 or 2 days each week we will accompany a tourboat, explain the importance of a safe encounter with a whaleshark for the tourists and the animal and photo ID the sharks and process all data. Going back to point 2: it is super important to have citizen science! We try and photo ID all sharks present around the Philippines, but of course that is next to impossible. So if you are in the Philippines (or surrounding countries!), or were in the last few years, and have a video or photo of a whaleshark you’d like to share, contact me! We might be able to ID the shark which creates a better understanding of its movements 🐳.

Happy 4th of July all! This holiday is especially important to me as it’s the anniversary of my commitment to public service. This year carries a little extra sentiment as it marks 15 years of public service. I am hoping this is the halfway point of my career, if not sooner. Every year, I use this opportunity to reflect on things I’ve learned along the way: 1) Treat others as though you were on the other side of the desk. I often encounter individuals who are facing adverse actions: loss of a loved one, terminally ill, homeless, commission of a crime, and more. If you have good health, a job, roof over your head, and food on your table…consider yourself blessed. 2) Learn a new skill by teaching others. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching college courses as well as training new employees into the agency. The best way to learn a difficult or complex topic is to teach it to someone else. You’ll force yourself to learn and understand the material, so you don’t look like a fool in front of your colleagues. This is also a great opportunity to add value to yourself as an employee. 3) Accept the challenges that come your way. I’m often tasked with some of the most difficult and stressful cases in our office. These cases aren’t given to me because my boss hates me, but rather my boss has enough trust in me to get the job done. If your boss gives you something difficult, thank him/her for the opportunity to show your skills and abilities. If you fail, it becomes a learning/teaching moment (See number 2). Don’t be afraid of the challenge. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve all those who I’ve come in contact with. I look forward to the fireworks that the next 15 years will bring!

Today marks the first day of Direct Support Professionals Week! What is a Direct Support Professional? You may see the job title change—from Support Staff, Respite Worker, Home Staff, Day Program Staff, Employment Specialist, Key Worker or otherwise—but the goal is always the same: a Direct Support Professional offers necessary support to help people with disabilities thrive—at home, work, school, or wherever life takes them. You’re along for the ride, ready to help the person you support overcome challenges and barriers, celebrate successes, navigate good and bad days, and grow. From tasks like meal prep or personal care like hygiene, to exploring the city or visiting friends, you’re there to help them navigate their lives and build skills and independence. This takes trust and a personal connection, which you can establish by supporting them with their best interests and values in mind. The job requires you to be adaptable and flexible, which suits you if you’re looking for enriching experiences for you and the people you support each time you’re at work. (www.directsupportmb.ca)

Tiny Triumphs: Who would have thought that becoming the mess secretary in a college hostel, a job not exactly topping anyone's career wishlist, would teach me one of life's most valuable lessons? Flashback to my first semester of college- chaotic, late arrivals, and not one, but two rejections from societies. Amidst it all, a senior saw potential in my "strong" personality and offered me the role of mess secretary. Fast forward to today, and I find myself designing the entire mess menu, a task surprisingly rewarding. While some might scoff at this role, it's taught me a profound lesson: it's not about the size of the job, but the dedication and passion we bring to it. This experience taught me that no task is insignificant when approached with enthusiasm and dedication. It's not about seeking validation from others but about embracing every opportunity to showcase our work ethic and commitment to excellence. It's about making a conscious choice to invest our heart and soul into everything we do, knowing that our efforts have the power to make a meaningful impact on those around us. So, here's to the little things in life that make some sort of significant impact, even if it's just ensuring everyone gets their daily dose of "delightful" hostel food. Because clearly, good food equals a stellar mood, right?
