An underrated hiring hack: Don’t focus on pedigree alone. Focus instead on “distance travelled’. This allows you to look at a person through a different lens: Instead of just looking at the education, employment, history, etc of a candidate, you get to look at where the person began their journey from and where they got to. Often times you’ll find people who are extremely growth-minded, resilient, and mission driven.

I believe I have maxed out my upward potential with my current employer. I will be putting my resume back out and seeking further growth elsewhere. I am currently fully remote. My production levels are incredible. My references are phenomenal. I work for a healthcare org where I wear many different hats due to lack of funding. Anyone who has worked in education / healthcare / manufacturing understands juggling multiple job titles. I put my resume out for 3 weeks a few months ago. Had quite a few interviews. 1. Two offers (senior detection engineering type of work) 2. An offer or two if I was willing to relocate (I was not willing to move to the states requested) 3. Couple rejections (more dev type of work with Python/C# which I don't currently write a lot of, but am getting back into). I use to write a lot of Python, but I have been using a lot of tooling recently to harden Active Directory. It's been an obsession almost. Please note I am not willing to relocate to 1. Florida 2. Texas 3. Georgia 4. Mississippi 5. Alabama 6. Louisiana 7. Ohio 8. New Mexico 9. Arizona 10. Oklahoma 11. Kansas 12. Nebraska 13. Utah These are lovely states, but for one reason or another they don't work for my situation. I am considering other countries too. It's been long enough, I think I can safely share this online now without jeopardizing an opportunity. One day, on Dice, I found what might have been the secret opportunity I had been looking for: Test Job xxx Dice Test - Avengers Posted 60+ days ago | Updated 1 day ago Remote $100,000 - $140,000 Job Details This is a test *** DO NOT APPLY *** I only have one shot, so I took it. I applied for the job. My cover letter: "Test Job xxx Hiring Team, "I would very much like a position as a Test Job for The Avengers. I think I am very qualified to perform this position. In spite of the obvious contradiction presented herein, I think I would be extremely successful in not applying for this position ever again. This is, like, right in my wheelhouse. I would for real make you proud. You’ll tell your friends, “John is the actual best ever at not applying for this position over and over again. I’ve never seen anyone as successful. He is just amazing.” Your friends won’t even believe you. "But I believe you. I believe IN you. "You got this. "I appreciate that the position is remote, and I’ve been working out of my home office for ten years now, so I am very comfortable, in that regard. However, given the demanding requirements, I’m hoping that the salary noted in the job posting is negotiable. While I could settle for $140,000/year for this type of work, I worry that I might be tempted to keep watch for other opportunities. If you could increase the offer to $143,000/year, I’m sure that would be sufficient to ensure that we are both kept satisfied with this role. "I want to address the elephant in the room up front, however. I see that the listing notes that this position has been open for a while – “Posted 60+ days ago” but also “Updated 1 day ago.” I would like to better understand what it is that is making this position so difficult to fill. If it’s just because there are a lot of Avengers (and the roster seems flexible) and that requires the posting to remain open, that makes total sense. That being said, I’m a little worried that the real cause of the position being perpetually open is that it might involve working with Hawkeye, specifically. Like, I can get around that, but I would really feel better with a salary closer to $145,000/year if I have to work with That Guy. "In conclusion, I feel that I have a great deal of professional experience that makes me a perfect fit for this role. You would be well advised to seriously consider me as a final candidate for this role. Having been a resident of New York, growing up, I used to be really tight with Spiderman. I know he’s not always a traditional Avenger, per se, but I do feel like he would provide a great reference, if needed. "Thank you very much for your time. Job hunting sucks." In retrospect, it's pretty clear that the position WAS working with Hawkeye and he was insulted that I called him out. I'd have appreciated the job, but I maybe dodged an arrow. (Am I doing Job-Facebook right?)
