Executive Director at Museum Association of Arizona

From The Art Newspaper: There is no end to the museum exodus Higher salaries are a major reason why mid-level museum workers are leaving for commercial gallery jobs but instability caused by the Covid pandemic is also a factor In recent years, there has been a steady march of high-profile US museum curators into the commercial sector. But look a bit deeper, and you will find the trend does not stop at the curatorial department. Mid-level registrars, senior event producers, visitor services associates, video editors, retail assistants and even museum educators are making the shift too. And their transitions may have an even bigger impact on—and reveal more about—the future of museums than those of their more famous peers. https://lnkd.in/g8iQPxN6

I wonder to what extent this is a result of the number of middle-level employees who were let go during COVID, while their museums sat on endowments. Employees' dedication to their museums needs to be returned by dedication from the museum administration and board.

I just left the profession. Total burn out affected health. One person in a small museum, but under a parent group, doing multiple jobs. Took a sabbatical and I’m now still in non profit world, with higher salary, but more importantly for me, and being treated well and given the tools I need to be successful.

It seems that there are also a lot of restless Executive Directors and Development officers changing jobs every couple of years looking for better gigs instead of committing to improve the institutions that hire them. There is a revolving door problem with museum staff at all levels which wreaks havoc on strategic planning, fundraising efforts, and exhibition planning. And can we talk about Boards of Directors who often micromanage and cause good leaders to flee??? It’s a crisis.

Janice, Thanks for sharing. I had no idea this was taking place and find it disturbing and concerning with the exodus of talent leaving high profile museums.

Attention span of the under 30s is perhaps 2 minutes on a video. The demographic of supporters and visitors are skewed to over 50 years old. Museums have lost attedance and funding, but continue to increase the beurocrats and buildings. Meanwhile the extreme left radical bias infects every exhibit. Pity, Jon
