A personal reflection written by Dorothy Height almost 30 years ago about Medicare and its impact on Black Americans is mostly celebratory toward the major changes Medicare made for civil rights. However, the issues noted about health disparities for Black Americans are still true today. Statistics show that "people of color are more likely to report being in relatively poor health, have higher prevalence rates of some chronic conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, than White beneficiaries." Disparities mentioned that contribute to this are income and wealth. Read Dorothy Height's remarks📑: https://lnkd.in/g7x8DCFb. Black women have a maternal mortality rate of 2.9 times that of White women in the United States. Black infants are 3.8 times more likely to die from low birth weight complications. For several years, Black women and their health issues have been ignored and dismissed by medical providers claiming that we feel less pain or we can endure more pain than others. Even as medicine progresses, racial disparities persist! Join us on this awareness week to acknowledge that Black Health is important and black lives should be saved. Our mothers and babies matter too! #BlackMaternalHealthWeek

This is what I cannot accept. 🚫 The belief that having multiple diseases is inevitable. 🚫 The acceptance that Black women will live sicker and die earlier. 🚫 The idea that health is found in a pill bottle or in a doctor's office. 🚫 The reality that the last decade of your life will be spent in pain, sickness, and misery. This is what I am changing. 🌱 The narrative that health is hard, expensive, and available only for the privileged few. What are you no longer accepting? What are you changing? #health #wellness #advocacy

We embarked on our Community Justice Challenge yesterday with an eye-opening discourse on Medical Abuse and Informed Consent. Did you know that maternal death rates are highest among Black women, and these rates have more than doubled over the last twenty years? The roots of these health disparities trace back to centuries of racism and still contribute to the medical stereotypes against Black people that exist today. How can we in the social justice community engage in partnerships with marginalized groups to prevent medical abuse and promote health equity? What steps can be taken to hold healthcare institutions and providers accountable for racial medical abuse? #CommunityJusticeChallenge #HealthcareEquality

Healthcare topics aren’t always easy to bring up. Many Black Californians are suffering in silence because they don’t want to be a burden to their family, are embarrassed by their condition, or believe there’s nothing they can do about it. That’s why it’s so important to have a conversation with your healthcare provider. The more we talk, the more we can remove the stigma and support each other in taking necessary actions to get healthy and stay healthy. #BHEAW24 Join our movement. Become a member.
