Happy Friday! To celebrate we have our latest edition of Back Pages, where SAE Tom Symons talks about the potential impact of Prem games played abroad, and the media appetite to talk about it: "As the NFL’s International Series returns to London this month for its eighteenth year, the success and popularity of these annual fixtures in our capital city continue to grow - unique for a sport so deeply rooted in American culture. The UK’s media have shown keen interest, with outlets like the BBC, The Times, and the Daily Mail covering all things NFL London this week, as the game’s audience continues to expand on this side of the Atlantic, even catching the attention of Prince William. This raises the question of how the UK’s biggest sporting brand, the Premier League, would fare if competitive league fixtures were to take place in the U.S. or elsewhere abroad. The Premier League, as recently as July, reiterated that it has no plans to do so. However, with Spain’s La Liga planning overseas matches as early as the 2025-26 season, pressure for commercial expansion may begin to mount. As the 2021 Super League debacle proved — which, had it gone ahead, would have been to the huge detriment of the Premier League — English football fans don’t take kindly to breaking tradition in pursuit of financial gain. A Premier League ‘international series,’ similar to the NFL’s, would certainly stir controversy. However, the debate between commercial gain and cultural integrity is one the UK media would gladly sink their teeth into."

A friend sent this to me just before kickoff of a The Premier League friendly in Los Angeles. Take a good luck at the stands. Really empty, and it didn't fill up much, apparently. Why? Is it because there's no audience base for the Premier League or soccer in general in LA? Clearly not. They had pretty good attendance a couple nights later across town for a similar match. No, it's because the event was totally and fundamentally misconfigured. Tickets in the section from which the video was taken were well into the three figures, while many other sections were closed off. That makes no sense. The goal for a game like this has to be to fill the stands with a raucous, high-spirited crowd. The whole point of an "exhibition" is for people to see it, experience the game, build club and sport loyalty. None of that happens if, you know, nobody's there. Missing the mark this badly never has to happen. Let's talk about this event. It's a PL game, yes, but it's a pre-season kickabout. Most of the team will sub out at halftime, and nobody's going full speed. Still fun, but there's a limit to the appeal. You don't premium price for that in a 28k seat stadium. Even if you don't have the experience base to tell you that, it's not that hard to figure it out. They JLo'd this event. I have no idea why. But this is 100% avoidable...

Passing is a form of art in any game sports. When it comes to passing in football not enough is talked about the so called "message" and even if so, not enough depth was sprayed by the football media and experts. In this scene, the type of pass has three clear advantages over a sharper pass into the foot. 1. it remains open until the end whether it will continue with one or more contacts. Thus, the opponent players can't press properly. 2. it is easier to take the ball on the move 3. the free-running players in front of the ball have more time to position themselves favorably. The greatest show on earth The NRLs upcoming Vegas games are exciting and intriguing, really grabbing the imagination of keen observers across the world interested in the potential of the desired objective and what that actually is. The Sin city is hosting the worlds best RL players showcasing the most American sport not played in America. As the inaugural coach of the worlds only ever trans Atlantic RL team ( Toronto Wolfpack ) I feel qualified to share my opinion on the opportunity that presents itself and wonder what the objective actually is. I see two realistic goals. 1. To tap into the USAs sporting riches and secure enough interest to land what would be RLs most lucrative TV deal. Delivering the world’s toughest RL competition ( The NRL ) to an American audience through their TV screens. 2. To create a thriving American league that presents another sporting pathway for USAs young athletes of which there are many. To strategically position a moderate number of teams and create rivalries across America with a long term reality that America will produce its own RL players. Initially the worlds best players don’t need to grace America as the product is less scrutinised and the raw ingredients demonstrated by our second tier players will produce a product that America will love. The TV deal will follow, the worlds best players will follow as seen in soccers pathway. There is of course the possibility that USA becomes the worlds best and eventually call the shots. Exciting times either way and the opportunity to grow our sport is there. Crudely put but in reality, huge financial benefits are on offer. More importantly the world will finally see what the RL community already knows “ It’s the greatest game of all.” I’ve seen it work, I know what it looks like and I know the trials and tribulations from first hand experience. Our sport missed one opportunity for various reasons but the invaluable lessons learned from that experience has to be the catalyst for a successful attempt second time around. Interesting fact…. The World DanceSport Federation said the ranking methodology is based on each athlete’s top four performances within the past 12 months — but excludes Olympic events including the Paris Games and Olympic qualifier series events in Shanghai and Budapest. Additionally, no ranking events were held between December 2023 and the Olympics — to allow athletes to focus on qualification. The federation clarified that the unusual circumstances of this year’s competition schedule resulted in many athletes being ranked based on a single event. In Raygun’s case, her first-place finish at the Oceania continental championships in October 2023 earned her 1,000 points. Many within the breaking community have criticized the rankings for not giving a clear picture of breaking as a sport and as a culture. “Speaking of the WDSF, they actually don’t have any real merit with the breakers or the breaking community,” said Zack Slusser, vice president of Breaking for Gold USA. “And they also haven’t been able to organize events by their measure that would contribute to creating an accurate world ranking.” According to Slusser, breakers only performed in events organized by the WDSF — the Lausanne-based governing body for competitive dance sports — to get enough points to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Breakers “had no incentive, no desire to even continue participating with the WDSF after that,” Slusser said. “Because they’re not cultural events.
