As Nir Eyal astutely points out... The opposite of distraction is NOT focus. The opposite of distraction is actually TRACTION. (I took Nir's masterclass, and it was fab by the way!) So, the question is: how can we get traction on our most important goals? I'm hosting my 2nd CIO Coffee Talk next week, where we'll share... Our best hacks with each other on how to take control of: ↳ Email ↳ Calendar ↳ Meetings ↳ Competing Priorities This event is limited to 25 participants. (19 people registered for the last coffee talk.) As a reminder, this is a SALES-FREE safe zone! The event is scheduled for 12pm ET on Wednesday, April 17th. Preparing for a big meeting requires a multifaceted approach that begins well in advance of the actual event. Start by clearly defining the meeting's objectives and creating a detailed agenda that outlines key topics and time allocations. Research thoroughly, gathering all necessary data, reports, and supporting materials to bolster your arguments or proposals. Anticipate potential questions or objections from attendees and prepare thoughtful responses. Practice your presentation multiple times, focusing on clarity and conciseness. Familiarize yourself with the attendees' backgrounds and interests to tailor your approach effectively. On the day of the meeting, arrive early to set up and compose yourself. Remember to bring backup materials and be prepared to adapt your presentation if needed. By investing time in comprehensive preparation, you'll enter the meeting with confidence, ready to engage productively and achieve your desired outcomes. Stay tuned for more tips as we work on the game!

How do you run an effective board meeting? One hack that was shared with me and I've found effective is to directly ask your board a few questions on a slide at the very start of the board meeting so you give your board a chance to weigh in on some decisions early. It helps steer their feedback & advice to topics you want their feedback and advice on. In a cynical view: If you don't ask direct questions and get your board to weigh in early, they will feel obligated to be active and weigh in with advice on some topic during the meeting because that is their social & professional obligation. So you can steer them to topics you are open to advice on and then hopefully they won't weigh in on topics that you feel very strongly on and frankly don't want their advice on. Your board members will always weigh in on things that are really important and where they can help. This is to set a stage for them to all have their voices heard early on so they won't feel socially obligated to weigh in on things that don't matter or they don't feel strongly about to justify their attendance. I have personally found that board members really appreciates getting asked direct questions. It makes all of your board members and attendees feel comfortable speaking in the group and is a good Icebreaker for the start of a long meeting.

One of my pet peeves are meetings with no purpose, no agenda, no forethought or intended outcomes. Here are 3 things you should figure out before scheduling a recurring meeting: 👉🏾Purpose: Clearly define the reason for holding the meeting. What do you aim to achieve? What topics need to be discussed regularly? 👉🏾Agenda: Create a structured agenda that outlines the topics, time allocation for each item, and the person responsible for leading each discussion point. This keeps the meeting focused and on track. 👉🏾Attendees: Identify the key stakeholders and participants who need to be present. Ensure that each attendee has a clear role and can contribute meaningfully to the meeting's purpose. Have a great day ✌🏾

Stop booking meetings during lunch 🥪 If a meeting exists it should have value 💰 If it has value it should get company time ⌚ p.s. it's not a lunch & learn if you don't provide lunch.

When organizing or attending meetings, it's essential to ask ourself key questions to ensure we are making the best use of our time and contributing effectively. Here are a few reflections: Is my presence required in this meeting, or can I simply wait for the Minutes of Meeting (MOM)? If I attend, what value can I add to the discussion? Can the meeting proceed effectively without my input, or is my role critical to the outcome?
