Ok, the Raffles statue debate… 1) I said in my first book - back in 2001 - that I struggled with the glorification of British imperialist leaders, but for different reasons. I did - and still do - despise the class aspect. As a working-class kid, you’d expect me to say that. But there’s no doubt that Britain to this day - and their former colonies - still get caught up in that superior class bollocks, that has always had a whiff of eugenics. The posh accent, the upper-class mannerisms, the elite education and obsession with social status. And, quite frankly, the aping (and championing) of certain British imperialist tropes to this day - everything from posh high teas to tiffin rooms, as if far too many still want to live in an episode of Downton Abbey. 2) we still glorify this ‘class’ - whether it’s a Raffles statue or another Etonian actor in a Marvel movie. Why? We see the clothes, the accent and the entitlement and assume intelligence. Why must we keep glorifying upper class and privilege? 3) there are so many other figures in Singapore’s history - both local and international - who are worthy of statues, if that’s your thing, but maybe we could ease off with the foppish, entitled imperialists? 4) this bothers me because this adoration of the gilded classes is all well and good when watching a drama on Netflix or HBO, but it gets trickier as you get older and realise that these buggers’ privileges are STILL baked in. In 2024. In the UK, the Etonian, eugenics-loving clowns of today made Brexit possible. And in Singapore, too. Good luck making a go of it if you didn’t go to the right school, didn’t come from the right family etc. so why, again, must we keep glorifying the upper classes and their built-in privileges? For so many, It’s still a rigged game, in their favour, just as it was for Raffles. Why must we keep celebrating these people? I think they got enough. 5) anyway, I once wrote a short story on what a pompous, elitist tit Raffles really was. And you can read it for free here: https://lnkd.in/gbsfH4A4
