⛏️ Mining giant says it's time to walk away from the ‘proven fantasy’ of net zero Australian mining tycoon Andrew Forrest, founder and executive chairman of Fortescue, says it is time for the world to walk away from the “proven fantasy” of net zero emissions by 2050 — and to embrace “real zero” by 2040 instead. Fortescue, which is the world’s fourth-largest iron ore miner, has outlined plans to stop burning fossil fuels across its Australian iron ore operations by the end of the decade — and urged other hard-to-abate companies to follow suit. “We know the world can go real zero 2040 and I’m reaching out to the business people and politicians across our planet to say it is time now to walk away from this proven fantasy [of] net zero 2050 and adopt real zero 2040,” Forrest said in an exclusive interview. “We can, we must, let’s do it,” he added. Scientists have repeatedly pushed for rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to stop global average temperatures rising. I'm pleased to share an article I was lucky enough to co-author with Mona M. Forster, MBA, ICD.D: "Navigating net zero: Opportunities and challenges" published in this month’s Canadian Mining Magazine. The article discusses the critical role junior explorers and miners play in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. The exploration of critical minerals (for example copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt) by junior miners is at the headwaters of the value chain of almost all "clean technologies” such as EVs, wind turbines, rechargeable batteries and solar. Critical minerals exploration is a low emission activity in general, with little to no environmental or social footprint. However, junior explorers and developers are still coming under intense scrutiny from both investors and regulatory authorities. Key insights in the article include: *Regulatory and Investor Landscape: An examination of the evolving regulatory demands and investor expectations for transparent climate-related disclosures and sustainable practices. *Challenges and Opportunities: The unique challenges faced by junior miners, from physical and transition risks to technological and regulatory hurdles, and the opportunities they present for innovation and strategic positioning. *Technological Innovations and Industry Support: The role of tools and frameworks like PDAC's GHG calculator and e3 Plus in aiding junior mining companies to manage their carbon emissions and align with sustainability goals. *Strategic Implications: The importance of integrating sustainability into business strategies for long-term competitive advantage, investor attraction, and compliance with national and international goals. Getting started does not need to be expensive! Copper is vital for the green energy transition, and as demand rises, companies are exploring the potential of marine minerals. The world is going through a major transition towards digitisation, electrification, and green energy. Why go to the deep sea for copper? Copper has been mined by men since the stone age; it is the most important raw material in the industrial age. Marine minerals have been the source of copper from ophiolite complexes during the entire time; it has just been mined on land after continental drift has placed them above sea level and shuffled them around a bit, and temperature and pressure have metamorphosed the rocks. We now have the knowledge and technology to go where they form. Some have expressed concerns about deep-sea mining, but mining raw materials in locations where we will get the most metal-per-kg of rock with the least environmental impact must be considered. Extinct seafloor massive sulphide deposits along mid-ocean ridges show the potential of discoveries in the magnitude of 10s Mt of ore with Cu grades of 4-6% and potential of byproducts such as cobalt. 🪨🌊🪸Mining polymetallic nodules can significantly impact the ocean ecosystem. The process disturbs the seabed, potentially harming marine life and disrupting habitats. Sediment plumes created by mining activities can spread and affect water quality and marine organisms over large areas. Additionally, the removal of nodules, which can take millions of years to form, could have long-term ecological consequences. Balancing the need for these metals with the protection of marine environments is a critical challenge. To mitigate the environmental impact of mining polymetallic nodules, several alternatives and strategies can be considered: 🪨🌱Urban Mining and Recycling.Extracting metals from electronic waste and other discarded materials can reduce the need for virgin mining. Recycling rates for metals like copper and nickel are relatively high, but improvements can still be made. 🪨🌱Land-based Mining Innovations. Developing more sustainable and less invasive land-based mining techniques can help minimize environmental damage. 🪨🌱Alternative Materials.Researching and developing alternative materials that can replace or reduce the use of critical metals in green technologies can lessen dependency on these metals. 🪨🌱Improved Efficiency and Longevity. Enhancing the efficiency and lifespan of green technologies can reduce the overall demand for these metals. 🪨🌱Deep-sea Mining Regulations and Technology. If deep-sea mining is pursued, it should be under strict regulations. This includes comprehensive environmental impact assessments, monitoring programs, and technologies designed to reduce sediment plumes and habitat destruction. #polymetallicnodules

A new era of mining is upon us. The global push toward electrification is changing more than just the cars we drive and the way our electric grids are configured. It is re-orienting the global economy around a new set of commodities critical to building the electric storage and essential components that will drive the electric economy. Those commodities, also known as critical minerals, will be to the twenty-first century what fossil fuels were to the twentieth: a resource that plays a major role in global trade and geopolitics. If minerals are the new oil, then their production will become an increasing economic and geopolitical priority. However, the US is not producing nearly enough of them to meet the lofty electrification goals it has committed to, and has become reliant on foreign countries like China to supply the gap. In 2023, the United States was import-reliant for 95 percent of rare earth minerals, essential for batteries and electric motors. In today's Foundations & Frontiers essay, Anna-Sofia Lesiv looks at the state of American mining and what can be done to accelerate innovation in this space.
