Insightful Advice on Working with Recruiters from "Up the Organization" In the book "Up the Organization: How to Stop the Corporation from Stifling People and Strangling Profits", author Robert C. Townsend, former top executive at American Express and Avis, offers valuable wisdom on many business topics. One chapter focuses on effectively partnering with recruiters ("headhunters"). Townsend advises writing a description of your ideal candidate in your own words, rather than generic corporate-speak. He recommends spending time interviewing each candidate the recruiter sends, even if they don't seem perfect at first glance. The key is providing the recruiter with specific, detailed feedback after each interview on how well the candidate fits or doesn't fit your criteria. By investing this time to give detailed input, Townsend suggests you can iteratively guide the recruiter to progressively deliver candidates who are an excellent match for the role and your needs.
