Women in STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields have long been dominated by men, with women historically underrepresented. However, it is vital to encourage and inspire girls to pursue STEM education and careers. Females aren’t considering technology careers as they aren’t given enough information on what working in the sector involves and also because no one is ready to provide it as well. The need for women in STEM is greater than ever, says expert Women represent only 35% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), with the largest gender gaps in engineering and computer science. Christina DiMarino, an engineering professor at Virginia Tech, believes it is time to change this narrative and emphasizes the importance of starting STEM education early for women and underrepresented groups. The challenge: Gender imbalance DiMarino regularly observes the lack of women in STEM, but she also views it as a significant opportunity to develop future women leaders in these fields. "STEM environments have historically been shaped by men, which has made it difficult for these fields to become more inclusive for women and underrepresented groups," DiMarino explained. "There have been efforts to increase diversity in STEM, but building a truly representative community will take time." Why diversity matters in STEM "Engineers work to solve humanity’s critical issues, but if they lack diversity, it becomes harder to recognize and address the problems faced by different groups," said DiMarino. "More diversity brings a wider range of perspectives and experiences, which can lead to more effective solutions." Steps to increase women's participation in STEM DiMarino highlighted the importance of providing women with equal opportunities and resources, both in academic settings and in the workplace. 🌉 Bridging the Gender Gap in STEM: How Do We Encourage More Young Women to Join? As we launched our Deploying Community Network training, we were determined to see strong female representation among our participants. We took intentional steps to foster inclusivity: 1. 👥 Diverse Recruitment Team – We assembled a team that included two influential women - a community leader from a Kilifi Village and the Deputy Principal of Mkwajuni VTC, alongside support from the Chief's Office. 2. 👩🏫 Female Trainer as Role Model – We selected a female trainer to serve as a mentor, showing young women that they have a place in STEM fields. 3. 🌍 Community Engagement – We actively engaged with the community to challenge the misconception that technology is a "male-dominated" space. Despite these efforts, only 7 of our 24 trainees are young women. This has us asking: What more can be done to empower young women to pursue opportunities in technology and community networks? We've focused on mentorship, inclusive recruitment, and community awareness. However, the reluctance among young women to join STEM programs remains a barrier. However, despite progress, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields, facing systemic biases and cultural barriers that hinder their advancement.
