Can anyone connect me with someone who runs an educational charity or nonprofit that is not actually a school, that is successfully set up as an eligible body, so that it does not need to charge VAT on its sales of education? Growing pains at www.p4he.org mean that we need to look at converting to non-profit status or we will have to start charging parents VAT for our online courses and residentials, which will really hit affordability. The organisation would be a perfectly legitimate non-profit as we do great work with underserved children who are home-educated, gifted, neurodiverse and sometimes all three, and everyone involved goes beyond what we're reasonably paid to do. However, from experience as a trustee at another organisation, the precise wording of the documents establishing the organisation are more important to the VAT man than the reality of the work you're doing. I'll take legal advice as well, and hope to find out exactly what Labour are doing to make sure we wouldn't be collateral damage in the move against private schools, but would be great to speak to someone who has got it right.
