With over 100 patents to his name, Smoot's journey is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation. #Creativity is not a rare gift for the few, but a fundamental human disposition. It's in our nature to imagine, to create, and to bring our ideas to life. As a child, Smoot's fascination with electricity and electronics was sparked by a simple experiment with a light, batteries, a bell, and wire. This curiosity lit a path that led him to become one of the most prolific inventors in his field. Smoot's path is particularly inspiring because he didn't have a lot of money growing up, and he never saw a black engineer until he became one. Despite these challenges, he had the confidence to realize his potential and follow his passion. His story serves as a powerful reminder that every child, regardless of their background, is born with the potential for creativity. Our ideas, no matter how small they may seem, have meaning and value. They are the sparks that can light up the world with innovation and progress. So, let's encourage our children to dream, to invent, and to realize that their ideas have meaning. Let's help them understand that they can achieve great things, regardless of where they come from. It's like a chill, small-batch, locally-sourced alternative to YC, where you can either hang out as a member forever - or choose the VC-funded adventure. The -1 to 0 phase [0] they talk about at SPC is real, and it made a real difference for us to have a home at SPC. It takes a lot to quit your job and do something new, especially when it isn't entirely clear what you're doing. (1) Do it – take the leap! and (2) consider joining SPC. Though the core vision has remained the same, many of the important turns in our squiggle at Substrate (including the graph framework) came from those early days at SPC.
