Why do beverage brands so often create product flavors like Ice Pop and Fruit Punch that have no core flavor profile? My tinfoil hat, not-so-scientific flavor hypothesis: Brands that make food and beverage products will often create flavors that we as consumers don't specifically know the taste of so that we don't have a preset expectation of how the product should taste. For example, Blackberry Pomegranate. While you might know what a blackberry tastes like and a pomegranate tastes like, you don't specifically know the flavor profile of both combined. But if you say the product is orange or watermelon and your drink or food product product doesn't taste like it, you have a large subset of consumers who say well it doesn't taste exactly like watermelon therefore I don't like the taste. With flavor and taste a critical driver of repurchase in food and beverage this is my tinfoil hat theory. But I would love to hear more on this from anyone in the food/bev flavor world.
