We won a Brolga Award! The critical role Jawoyn Association and Nitmiluk Tours play in driving economic outcomes for the Big Rivers region cannot be overstated. This impact extends beyond benefits for Jawoyn people—it supports the region’s economy more broadly. As the largest employer outside of government in the Big Rivers region, the Jawoyn Association provides jobs for 270 people across tourism, civil construction, building, family services, rangers, CDP, and more. Winning a Brolga is incredible recognition for just one part of this remarkable organisation. Keep up the inspiring work, Nitmiluk Tours and Cicada Lodge!
Nitmiluk Tours and Cicada Lodge were honoured to receive the Brolga Award for Tourism Restaurant and Catering Services at the recent Northern Territory Tourism Awards. There’s so much that goes into an award like this. On the night, we were proud to be represented by Jawoyn Board members, NT Parks (our co-managers of the National Park), and some young Jawoyn leaders. But the success of Nitmiluk comes from a much larger team. Across the Jawoyn Association, we have around 270 employees, making us the second-largest employer in the Big Rivers region after the government. At any given time, Nitmiluk alone has over 120 employees. This is a huge team effort, and the impact goes far beyond an award. A proportion of every dollar spent at Nitmiluk is reinvested into supporting the 10 Jawoyn communities across Big Rivers. This economic model reflects the Jawoyn vision of creating sustainable improvements in economic, social, cultural, health, and education outcomes—enhancing the quality of life for our people. We want to extend a special thanks to all the individuals and organisations who have supported us in achieving these goals. The model works, and we’re always open to sharing our approach with other Aboriginal organisations striving to improve outcomes for their communities.
