As #NationalBlackBusinessMonth wraps up, I've been reflecting on its true significance. This month exists to recognize the contributions of Black-owned businesses and to spotlight the disparities we face—disparities that impact us all. Black Americans make up 13.6% of the U.S. population, but only own 2.2% of businesses with employees. That gap is costing us—potentially $1.5 trillion by 2028, according to McKinsey. Imagine the difference closing that gap could make. Why does this gap exist? From my conversations and experience, it comes down to three challenges: 1. Limited access to capital. 2. Smaller networks for support and opportunity. 3. Fewer resources like mentorship and business expertise. But this isn't just a Black business issue—it’s an economic issue. When any part of our community can’t reach its full potential, everyone loses. My journey as an entrepreneur and in speaking with so many other entrepreneurs has shown me that success is about more than hard work—it’s about having the right support, knowledge, and opportunities. So, how can we make a real difference? 1. Support Black-owned businesses year-round. 2. Advocate for policies that increase access to capital and resources for underrepresented entrepreneurs. 3. Offer mentorship and share your expertise with Black business owners in your community. To my fellow Black entrepreneurs: let’s be excellent at what we do, build and expand our networks, share our lessons learned & success strategies, and remember to ask for help when needed. This month may be ending, but our work is just beginning. Let’s focus on solutions—what tools, resources or advice do you have in support of Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs? Share in the comments so we can learn from each other and make progress. The best is yet to come. 🩷 #BlackBusinessMonth #EconomicGrowth #BusinessDiversity #CommunitySupport #supplierdiversity #Entrepreneurship ##TheUnleashedLife #TheBestIsYetToCome #DrReneeBaker
