The indie film world lost a giant figure in Roger Corman, and I heard lots of news stories about that, well-deserved. But we also lost another incredible figure of the indie world, perhaps less widely recognized, in the last few days, Mark Daman. He may not be as well-known a name, and I heard no non-trade news stories about his passing, but his value to the indie world is inestimable. He essentially created the foreign pre-sales model for financing films, initially (I believe) with PSO--Producer Sales Organization. In a world where my formerly beloved studios are largely making crazy expensive comic book films and toys-come-to-life "IP" movies, his model still supports the development and production of great films. (I put "IP" in quotes because all films are based on material protected by IP rights, but the term seems to be used now mainly for well known comic characters, games, toys, ie non-literary "IP". No offense intended to my friends in that business.) RIP to another giant of the indie film world!

A new mindset: I can do a bigger film with an indie level approach. Almost all films can be achieved with less money. There’s a lot of extra spectacle in movies that, if you think about it, seem to be there only for the sake of “bigger”. Yes, you probably can’t get Brad Pitt to star, or Colin Farrell. But even some spectacle can be done much more efficiently and inexpensively with a little elbow grease, DIY and ingenuity. We don’t have to spend money just to have bragging rights. Figure out how you can do something for less. Put the money and effort on the screen. Learn skills that can save you money. We did that all on 13 Miles and are doing it on The Quiet Canadians. In the end, quality comes down to execution and storytelling, not the budget. There's a constant choice between big-budget blockbusters and independent films when it comes to what to watch next. Many gravitate towards the flashy appeal of blockbusters, drawn in by star-studded casts and stunning special effects. They often offer a sense of escapism with slick production values and high-energy stories. However, these films sometimes prioritize spectacle over substance, leading to predictable plots and less character development. On the flip side, independent films shine a light on authentic storytelling and diverse cultural perspectives. They allow for a deeper exploration of themes and emotions, making them resonate long after the credits roll. Yet, the downside can be their limited distribution, which may mean they slip under the radar or aren’t as accessible to mainstream audiences. So, how about meeting in the middle? Mixing both options allows for an enriching viewing experience that appreciates the artistry of independents while enjoying the engaging spectacle of mainstream cinema. Embrace both worlds! Start by exploring indie films that get talk on platforms like Screen Daily. Dive into discussion forums or online screenings where indie gems are showcased. Next time you're planning your movie night, choose one blockbuster and one indie film—perhaps something off the list of must-watch UK indie films this awards season. 🎥✨ Let’s celebrate the artistry of cinema and lift up independent stories together! 🌍❤️ #CindieCinema #IndieFilms #FilmBuff #FilmCommunity #SupportIndie #Storytelling

Okay, pull up a comfy chair, make yourself a warm cuppa, get your notebook and pen out, and get writing! This is the time to get the UK Independent Film sector busting out of the seams and producing the brilliant output we excel in creating. As Rt Hon Lisa Nandy MP and Culture Secretary recently posted...... '.........Independent film productions costing up to £15 million to benefit from an increased tax relief of 53% (the) Move will empower UK filmmakers to create more independent films and co-produce with other countries The next generation of indie films has been handed a major boost by the government with the introduction of a tax relief uplift. This will create jobs and drive growth by making more British hits like Aftersun and Billy Elliot possible. The Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC), confirmed today by the Chancellor and Culture Secretary as the London Film Festival gets underway, will mean that for the first time productions with a budget up to £15 million will be eligible for a relief of 53% on qualifying expenditure. Films with a budget up to £23.5 million are also eligible for the IFTC and the relief will be tapered. The creative industries are a key part of the economy, generating £125 billion a year, and form a central part of the Government’s mission to grow the economy. The UK film sector is already worth £1.36 billion and employs more than 195,000 people, with the potential to grow further thanks to these reliefs. https://lnkd.in/extweJF6

What's in a title? .... Just about everything you need to make your project stand out in a crowded market. Be sure your project has the title it deserves. For hard genre films, the simpler title is often the better way to go ("The Purge," "Taken," "Halloween," "Death Wish," etc.). Titles for creative works cannot be copyrighted, which is why the distributor of your finished film does the customary title search to make sure there aren't similar films/shows with the exact same title as yours. If there are, have an alternate title or two ready.

Just finished the screenplay 'The Final Watch'. This has had comprehensive script coverage and achieved a high score, giving the following; "The Final Watch is a gripping psychological and supernatural thriller with immense potential for both critical acclaim and audience appeal. Its haunting atmosphere, layered character arcs, and rich thematic undertones elevate it into the realm of elevated horror, akin to films like The Lighthouse and The Witch. This script stands out as a masterful exploration of isolation, madness, and ancient maritime folklore. Its strong marketability and contained production requirements make it an ideal candidate for production, particularly for studios or filmmakers seeking intelligent and atmospheric horror with a strong emotional core." Logline: Amid an unrelenting storm on the remote and haunted Eilean Mor, three lighthouse keepers wrestle with isolation, paranoia, and an ancient, vengeful force that demands a terrible sacrifice for their survival. This is based on a true story. Happy to discuss this in strictest confidence. Please pm me or email russell@station211.com Also open to discuss potential option/sale. #thefinalwatch #Station211

Ever felt like your creative idea was too unique for the mainstream studios to touch? Well, you're not alone. Just ask Justin Simien, who faced the challenge of funding his project, Dear White People, when no traditional studio was willing to take the risk. Yet, the film found its audience and soared beyond expectations. This resonates with the journey of many indie films that defied the odds and made it big. Here's a glimpse at some underdog films that went from Sundance to blockbuster success: - **Billy Elliot:** A heartwarming tale that struck a chord with audiences and became a massive hit. - **Hoop Dreams:** A groundbreaking documentary that tackled deep social issues and still managed to captivate viewers. - **The Blair Witch Project:** A low-budget horror sensation that took the world by storm and left a lasting impact. - **Napoleon Dynamite:** A quirky cult classic that proved you don't need a big budget to win big at the box office. - **Eraserhead:** David Lynch's surreal masterpiece that defied convention and became a cult favorite. - **Little Miss Sunshine:** The little film that could, overcoming setbacks to become a beloved and successful indie gem. - **Beasts of the Southern Wild:** A mesmerizing work of art that captured hearts and went on to receive critical acclaim. These indie films remind us that sometimes the most unconventional ideas are the ones that resonate the most. It's a testament to the power of creativity and the beauty of storytelling that transcends boundaries. Have you discovered any indie gems that defied expectations?
