A story...
I am with my Dad in South Florida, and my desk faces out this big picture window onto the lush greenery of the now-closed golf course. A tree died a few years back, and a big limb fell. The association cut the dead tree and removed the debris, except for the large limb that had already crashed to the ground.
I have been watching one of the grounds caretakers use a golf cart to remove the remaining branches since the occurrence. He comes every Thursday, sorts the branches by size, stacks them within the two milk crates affixed to the back of the cart, and then creates creative structures to balance as many mid-size branches as possible. The largest are tied using a polypropylene rope to the back and dragged behind them.
This gentleman's weekly effort on this task takes about 2 hours, and he has been doing this for many weeks. He is finally reaching the bottom of the pile of debris with about 1/3 of the branches left to remove. At this rate, the tree removal will be complete by the end of the year.
The tools we use to accomplish a task are crucial. As I often do, I shared this story with my leadership team, likening it to us cleaning our kitchens with Kleenex. We would never do that. But this is a common issue.
What would you do? Do you follow the request, and proceed "branch by branch?" When was the last time this happened to you? Did you raise your concerns to your leaders? Let's talk about it.
