In a Q&A with BRAC, 2019 Large Business winner Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA) shared some insight on better embracing diversity in the business world. If you want to integrate more robust D&I practices in your organization, setting an example from the top goes a long way. "Develop a business case that clearly communicates why diversity and inclusion are important to the long-term success of your business. The leaders of the organization must be held to the same standards as all other employees," noted Roderic Teamer, director of Diversity Programs and Business Development at BCBSLA. "For example, if training is mandatory for all employees, leaders must also participate. Finally, commit to a long-term strategy. Diversity and Inclusion have rightfully taken centre stage, but let's shine a light on their less-discussed sibling: Belonging. Reflecting on the evolution of legal culture, I've identified key strategies to foster a true sense of belonging in our workplaces. You can read more about it in the article - I've even managed to be nostalgic about "shoeless joes" (sort of). Here are five takeaways from the recent GLL London breakfast round table: 1️⃣ Navigating Team Belonging: Identify where you fit in – company, board, senior management, or legal function. Seamless alignment in values and culture is ideal, but what common thread binds you if you can't pinpoint your team? 2️⃣ Balancing Professionalism and Authenticity: Break down the professional-personal life boundary. Fluidity allows colleagues to open up, fostering trust. Embrace the idea that life has professional and personal chapters; you don't have to lay your entire book bare, but allow colleagues to read a little further in. 3️⃣ "Check-In" Energy: A unanimous vote for the power of "check-ins" in nurturing belonging. It's a collective duty for all team members, not just leadership, to actively support each other. Remote or face-to-face, 1:1 interactions hold immense value. 4️⃣ Come Feel The Noize: Identify "amplifiers" within your professional circle, not necessarily in management. They play a vital role in cultivating a culture of belonging. Authentic culture doesn't solely come from the top; learn from every corner of the team. 5️⃣ Measuring Up: Utilize tools like engagement and pulse surveys to enhance belonging. However, be cautious of anonymity risks and ensure these tools lead to meaningful change, not just score-chasing games. Some movements need to mature, and this is one of them. The business environment has the advantage that ideas can be vetted by the results you get instead of a vague notion of what is virtuous. In the business environment, you also get real-time feedback in that the success of the endeavor is the goal. Of course, we also want to make sure that what we do benefits society overall but those measurements are often very nebulous. The point here is that focused, measurable goals are the best way to vet an idea. Couple that with a more thoughtful analysis of what we are looking for from our actions, and we grow. Corporate boards are not installed to boil the ocean or produce heaven on earth, they have a job to do for the company and the stakeholders of that company in the context of business. That should determine 1) who needs to be around the Board table and 2) what they must produce to move the dials. #strategicthinking
