What we can learn from giant clams? 🐚 🥟 In this work, Amanda Holt, Lincoln Rehm Ph.D. and Alison Sweeney study the photosynthetic efficiency of a complex biological system: symbiotic giant clams that host single-celled algae in their tissues. They present a simple model of a “solar transformer” inspired by the geometry of these clams and find a straightforward, general mechanism to achieve a photosynthetic light-use efficiency of 67% under natural tropical illumination. The findings could offer insights for improving solar energy conversion systems. I'm excited to share that our paper on the nonlinear mechanics of highly extensible plant epidermal cell walls has been published in PNAS! Our research shows that plant cell walls are incredibly strong and extensible, behaving like an elastic cellulose network capable of sliding while maintaining elastic stiffness. The chemical evolution towards more and more complex molecules in space is one of the key questions in the field of astrochemistry. Researchers from HFML-FELIX at Radboud University have now identified an elusive intermediate in cold ion-molecule reactions using a combination of infrared action spectroscopy, kinetics, and quantum-chemical calculations. The finding could be of importance to understand formation routes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in cold environments of the universe like molecular clouds or planetary atmospheres.
