Every individual, whether living in care homes or receiving care in their own home, deserves to have their routines and preferences respected. This includes having control over when they go to bed and when they wake up, as these are basic aspects of human dignity. Carers often report that they are sometimes forced to follow the schedules set by the care home or care provider—whether due to logistical challenges, time constraints, or staffing issues—which can feel disempowering for the individual receiving care. For people living with dementia, this issue is even more concerning, as they may not have the mental capacity to express their discomfort or advocate for their own needs. Being put to bed too early or woken up too soon can lead to significant distress and confusion, impacting their emotional and physical well-being. Such disruptions can cause agitation, anxiety, and even behavioural issues, making it harder for them to settle and feel secure. It can also lead to physical exhaustion, as their natural sleep patterns are disturbed, worsening their overall health and quality of life. Families often share these concerns with CCFTV, feeling that their loved ones are being treated as items on a checklist rather than as individuals with unique needs and preferences. The care environment should be adaptable enough to accommodate a person’s daily preferences, offering care that fits around their life rather than imposing an institutionalised routine. Ensuring care that respects a person’s timing for rest, activities, and meals is essential to maintaining their dignity, comfort, and well-being. CCFTV is supporting families in these situations by advising them to have open conversations with care providers about the importance of flexible, person-led care that is individualised, adaptable, and focused on preserving the dignity and autonomy of vulnerable individuals. Rigid schedules imposed for convenience or logistical reasons often result in distress, frustration, and a lower quality of life for those receiving care. This is why CCFTV promotes the need for care providers to have systems in place that ensure care is delivered as agreed, that any deviations are properly justified and that families are kept informed and involved in their loved one’s care. 💚💜 #PersonCentredCare #Dignity #CCFTV
