World Humanitarian Day is today. It's meant to recognize the work of humanitarians around the world, many of whom are local to the communities they serve. The work of humanitarians - to help those affected by disaster, to help & empower those who are marginalized, to protect environments - has never been more important, but they are endangered like never before. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers. 2024 could be worse. #ActForHumanity. #WorldHumanitarianDay https://lnkd.in/g3jU_y6u rian-day

August 19 is World Humanitarian Day, and today and every day, we recognize those who have lost their lives or put themselves at risk to help people in need. Even one life lost is far too many. Every day, more than 16 million Red Cross workers make a difference around the globe. They are the beating heart of the world's largest humanitarian network, and they help people in need in more than 191 countries, often in dangerous conditions. They are our strength. They are what define us. And they help make the world a safer place every single day. Yet humanitarians face escalating violence. Humanitarians – staff and volunteers – must be protected. In disasters big and small and wherever the Red Cross works to prevent and alleviate human suffering, the Red Cross emblem communicates that assistance is being provided by the Red Cross in keeping with our fundamental principles of humanity, independence, neutrality, unity, impartiality, universality and voluntary service. #ProtectHumanity

In my reflections for World #HumanitarianDay 2025, I felt it crucial to recognise and acknowledge the indispensable role of affected communities themselves in humanitarian actions. Communities affected by disasters, including the volunteers and community mobilisers who live there, are not merely recipients of aid but the first responders and active participants in crafting solutions that are culturally, geographically and economically relevant and sustainable. As the world grapples with ever more complex and protracted humanitarian emergencies and disasters, a lot more of us will be required to step up, step forward, dig deep and contribute to our communities. Because we all have the potential to be #humanitarians #CommunityEmpowerment #HumanitarianAction #LocalLeadership #SustainableAid #ResilientCommunities

With an estimated 120 million people forcibly displaced worldwide—of which over 43 million are refugees—this global crisis is one of the defining challenges of our time. Amid the immense hardships that forcibly displaced people face, including political instability, war and the growing threat of climate disasters, we must remember that health is a fundamental human right, one that transcends borders and circumstances. At Americares our mission is to save lives and improve health for people affected by poverty or disaster. And for refugees, this means providing quality physical and mental health care tailored to their unique needs. Now more than ever, we’re focusing on supporting those forcibly displaced by some of the worst humanitarian emergencies of our time, including the wars in Gaza, Syria and Ukraine as well as the crisis at the Colombia-Venezuela border. Often, this looks like helping people access care in a new country where they don’t know the medical system or speak the language, offering emotional support for families and children who are reeling from trauma and loss, providing a sense of safety for people who have nowhere else to go and so much more. Health is a right that every person deserves. Together, let’s make certain that people who are displaced receive the care and support they need to heal, thrive and rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. #WorldRefugeeDay #Refugees #Health #HumanitarianAid

It's #WorldHumanitarianDay!!!! Let's take a minute to honor our friends and colleagues who work day-in and day-out to deliver life-saving #humanitarian #assistance to people caught in crises around the world! These men and women go fearlessly into places affected by natural disasters and man-made conflicts. They deliver not only much-needed #aid, but they deliver #hope. It is estimated that more than 300 million people require humanitarian assistance and protection this year due to natural disasters, acute food insecurity, and conflict. Humanitarian workers are vital in responding to all of these crises. They bring food, health care, and shelter to those who are suffering. Their work is dangerous. In fact, 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarians, as 280 aid workers from 33 countries were killed. Sadly, 2024 will end up being even worse. To all aid workers around the world, including those who are members of DACOR and DACOR Bacon House Foundation, a sincere thank you for your courage and dedication.

This World Humanitarian Day, we confront a stark reality: 2023 was the deadliest year ever recorded for humanitarian workers, with 2024 poised to follow a similar path. In our role in urban search and rescue, these statistics are not just numbers— they represent real risks to teams on the ground. At SARAID, we advocate for the enforcement of international laws designed to protect aid workers and the communities they help. It’s imperative that we collectively #ActForHumanity to ensure that those providing lifelines in conflict and disaster zones can do so safely. #WorldHumanitarianDay #HumanitarianProtection

Collect Data During Humanitarian Crises Up-to-date information is vital in the hours following a natural disaster, disease outbreak, or an increase in conflict. With GeoPoll’s remote mobile methodology, humanitarian aid organizations can quickly contact those in affected areas even when aid workers are unable to reach them on the ground. https://lnkd.in/dMqkksSK #HumanitarianData #ReliefResearch #Data #NGO #GeoPollResearch

The humanitarian system isn’t working for internally displaced persons (IDPs). Too often, humanitarian responses to internal displacement are slow, not joined up, and overlook people’s needs. That’s why Lewis Sida, Erin Mooney and Kevin Kennedy (supported by HPG) spent the last 18 months consulting over 1,500 IDPs across six countries as part of a new review into how the humanitarian system currently responds to IDPs, and what improvements it needs to make in order to meaningfully help those affected by internal displacement. Among the recommendations is that: ⚡ The humanitarian system must deliver faster and more joined-up responses ❤️ IDPs are put at the heart of responses 🔗 Accountability is reinforced within the system Learn more in these latest findings → https://lnkd.in/ecDVqRP3 #IDP #InternalDisplacement #Refugees #NewReport

2moThe toll is so high because of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The #gazaaidworkersmemorial remembers the Palestinian and international humanitarian workers who lost their lives since October last year. Let's remember on #worldhumanitarianday - in Gaza and elsewhere - who lost their lives whilst saving others. https://gazaaidworkersmemorial.websitepro.hosting/
