#Uzbekistan🇺🇿 plans new international #airport🛬 in #Bukhara According to the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s press staff, plans for a new international airport in the Bukhara region were presented to Mirziyoyev on October 9. The airport will be capable of handling 1,200 passengers per hour. The existing Bukhara airport currently serves just 400 people per hour, or around 1 million passengers per year, and is no longer adequate to meet the needs of the local population and the expanding number of visitors. Construction on the new airport began on May 31, this year, during President Mirziyoyev's visit to Bukhara. The initiative, which is part of a public-private collaboration aims to give Bukhara a true international airport. The new facility is expected to attract more foreign airlines as well to increase regional and global connectivity by providing better services for both passengers and aircraft. Outdated air traffic control and passenger service systems, as well as lounges hinder the ability to increase the number of flights at the existing airport. Most travellers must fly to Tashkent, Samarkand, or Urgench to reach Bukhara. 95 percent of the more than 1 million foreign tourists that visited Bukhara in 9 months arrived by rail or by road. The region aims to expand tourist infrastructure beyond just an airport, with investments in hotels and other facilities ongoing. Over the following three years, the number of tourists visiting Bukhara is expected to climb to 8 million. Bukhara is the 7th largest city in Uzbekistan but one of the most important cultural sites in the Central Asian region, with a rich 5000 year history and large amount of preserved historical sites, which has prompted UNSECO to designate the centre of Bukhara as a World Heritage Site.
