The colonization of Palestine was envisioned long before the founding of Israel. Narratives of a “rightful” Jewish home and return to Palestine complicate the idea of Palestine having colonial origins (1). Yet, Palestine’s history is similar to those of colonies across the globe: geopolitical, military, and religious interests converged to create international consensus for colonization (2). Numerous historical documents from the late 1700s reveal how these interests cemented European plans to colonize “the Holy Land” (3). Inherent to calls for colonizing Palestine were those for creating a Jewish state (1, 2, 4, 5). A prominent English Jewish statesman made the case in 1844 that Palestine provided “greater certainty of success” for permanent “occupation” than Canada or the UK because “here they will find wells already dug, olives and vines already planted, and a land so rich as to require little manure” (3). One of the most important expressions of the intent to colonize is embodied in the 1917 Balfour Declaration encouraging the “establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” (6). UK Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour wrote the 67-word letter in the post-WWI context of dividing former Ottoman Empire territories amongst Western victors of the war (7). 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒅 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒅.📢 ►𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅 has recently gained popularity as a symbol of “ceasefire” in the 𝘐𝘚𝘙𝘈𝘌𝘓-𝘏∀𝘔𝘈𝘚 conflict. However, this is a gross misappropriation. The “𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅” has a decades-old violent meaning for Jews in the Middle East. It signifies the bloody history of pogroms and the slaughter of Jews.◄ ►𝑶𝒏 𝑱𝒖𝒏𝒆 𝟭-𝟮, 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟭, on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, a pogrom was carried out against the Jewish community of Baghdad, Iraq. This pogrom is known as the 𝑭𝒂𝒓𝒉𝒖𝒅, which means “𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏.”◄ ►Before the pogrom, 𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔 were painted on Jewish houses. The rioters, who carried knives and swords, looted Jewish houses, burned them, and then proceeded to kill, torture and mutilate Jews.◄ ►𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒓𝒉𝒖𝒅 occurred right after the defeat of Iraq’s pro-𝘕∀𝘡𝘐 government which had been formed by Rashid Ali al-Kailani and the British. It is imperative that we halt the cycle of senseless wars plaguing our world and instead pave the way for peaceful resolutions that benefit all parties involved. By embracing diplomacy and cooperation, we can create a future where conflicts are resolved through dialogue and compromise, leading to win-win outcomes for everyone. It is time to shift our focus towards building a future of prosperity, where nations work together towards common goals, fostering growth, development, and harmony on a global scale.
