“...a central question of this book is how the challenges involved in the relational work of reaching out to the un-housed, abject, and excluded can be held in mind by professionals when ‘coming in from the cold’ is too much to bear or identify with for those hard-to-reach groups, and when those service organisations are suffused with feelings of failure and ambivalence that are then introjected into the system....Scanlon and Adlam have written a stimulating book that throws down an ethical gauntlet especially to all those who may idealise the helping professions.” – Jessica Evans, Open University New review of 'Psycho-social Explorations of Trauma, Exclusion and Violence...' by Dr Christopher Scanlon (DPhil) and I (2022) (wow! already nearly two years ago!) has appeared in Journal of Psychosocial Studies: https://lnkd.in/eYgRmYVi The Journal editors have done us the honour of bracketing the issue between Jessica Evans' review and the first paper, by Jonathan Day, which is very much based on a reading and application of my work with Chris over the last twenty years: https://lnkd.in/eYbx4UNE Apologies to those who may not be able to get past the BUP paywall, if you would like to see a scan of the full review, drop me a message.... #psychosocial #structuralviolence #homelessness #unhousedminds #inhospitableenviroments #groupanalysis #migration #climatedisaster #racialequity #socialjustice #socialinclusion

The discussion included childhood exposure to violence, its impact on mental health, and the interplay with social experiences that drive youth violence in Brazil. Well done for consistently enlightening the public on this important issue, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi (Merchant of Hope)
Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi (Merchant of Hope) emphasises the crucial moment when religious leaders need to collaborate with governmental bodies. She argues that mediation alone is insufficient, especially when a woman's mental health crisis demands psychiatric help. Her insights into the role of religious and traditional institutions in combating domestic violence were shared on Jasiri. Continue watching; click here for the full video 👇🏿 https://lnkd.in/dahD94Aj

TW: Mentions of residential schools As we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our practice stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities, honouring the survivors of residential schools and those who never returned home. Today is a reminder of the deep-rooted trauma that continues to impact generations, and the importance of collective healing. As therapists, we are committed to providing trauma-informed care that recognizes the unique experiences of Indigenous individuals. This means understanding the layers of intergenerational trauma, acknowledging the ongoing effects of colonization, and creating a safe, culturally sensitive space for healing. Decolonizing therapy is a vital step in this process. It involves challenging traditional Western models and integrating Indigenous knowledge systems, healing practices, and cultural traditions into our care. We believe that true reconciliation in mental health requires listening, learning, and adapting our practices to meet the needs of Indigenous communities with respect and humility. Today, we reflect on the importance of mental health support for those carrying the weight of historical trauma. racism as a behavioural disorder. The writer comes at from a social constructionist lens of learned assimilation. The implications of this interesting approach is that dominant mechanism of actions in the spheres that make up societies, reproduce culture, enacting&enable the logics of the behavioural disorder - eg systemic practices that give rise to, sustain and reinforce some defensive exclusions and segregated system patterns. The tapestry is normed in. https://lnkd.in/ege7N7kE

Personal Reflection- Trauma-informed is neither a 'fancy' theoretical orientation nor a qualification. It simply recognizes the pervasiveness of life. It goes beyond the psychopathological lens of a clinician. Pathologizing a Muslim/Sikh/Christian/Dalit/Women for trauma is dangerous and dismissive. Because it is a natural response to the oppression they face. Their trauma is 'normal', rational, and even justified. The rupture is not clinical. It’s not important to dig into what has happened to them. That is an assessment which we have been providing for years. But rather, what they think has happened to them is more important. #trauma #clinicalpsychology #mentalhealth #therapy
