This month's nonprofit Spotlight is Habitat for Humanity: I got to sit down with Berkeley Donnelly and learn about the ways this organization can help, and also hear about the impact they've already made. Here's what we discussed: Q. What is one thing you want our community to know about this organization? A. ReStore. It's a store where the community can shop for furniture, household items, and building supplies. They also accept donations for these items as well so when you are decluttering or reorganizing the house and have some extra items you no longer need, please think of ReStore. Q. How many were you able to help in 2023? A. They built one 1,200sqft home for a family of 6. Kids were ages 6mo to 9yrs. Q. What brought you to this organization? A. God. Berkeley was a new single mom working at several different part time jobs when God lead her here. She was the last interview of the day, got the job, and has now been here for 5 years and loving the job. Q. What big events do you have coming up in 2024? A. They are working on 3 home projects this year and recently purchased 2 more lots for 2025. Q. How can we help? A. Spread the word! The organization struggled through Covid and are now finally picking back up again.

Feel The Love nominees all have one thing in common: they always put others first. But sometimes, these individuals need a little help making sure their own needs are being met. Many of our nominees simply don’t have the means to make their homes more comfortable on their own. That’s where nominations from community members like you come in. While unsung heroes come from all walks of life, some examples of past nominees we’ve honored include community figures such as teachers, firefighters, and volunteers; families facing hard times; veterans; senior citizens living in older homes; and people impacted by natural disasters. In short, anyone who serves others is a good candidate for a Feel the Love nomination. If you know someone in your community who deserves recognition, nominating them to receive a new heating or cooling system is a heartfelt way to show your appreciation. For more help identifying heroes in your hometown, consider partnering with a local nonprofit organization.

Further, teach your children service by living it. Teach zero sum of everything does not equal win/loose, instead, it’s connection to our human existence, our ingenuity and free thinking, innovation bolstered by our connections through serving, creating win/win. Hazards of working in philanthropy include overanalyzing your own donor experiences, which I did recently. Are my conclusions right? Am I off base? Any and all feedback is welcome. I’ve had several giving day stewardship experiences recently, and two stand out. One was a success, the classic stewardship “surprise and delight.” The other was a flop. I couldn’t get over the discrepancy and difference in these experiences. The flop raises more money. It has more resources, more staff, and more money to commit to “getting it right.” The flop thanked quickly and more frequently in the week after I gave…it also got my salutation wrong and sent generic messages. What differentiated the success? They too responded shortly after my gift with an acknowledgement. A week later, I got a day of giving impact thank you. Six weeks later, I got a “thank you for making your first gift on our day of giving” message. The organization utilized a disciplined and data-driven approach to fold me into their donor community. They took the time to ensure their stewardship communications were accurate, prioritizing accuracy over speed. Stewardship isn’t a sprint. While timeliness is important, accuracy and form matter, especially in today’s philanthropic environment. #philanthropy #stewardship #acknowledgements #donorrelations #fundraising

It's easy to get caught up in the shiny object mentality in #fundraising. While it's important to be aware of new trends, innovations, and resources which can make our jobs easier and enable us to raise more money, it can't be at the expense of the fundamentals of good fundraising. This is a masterclass by Roger M. Craver in what's essential to keeping more donors--good data maintained regularly, gratitude expressed genuinely and often, surveys to learn from your donors, using metrics like donor retention that help you focus your limited bandwidth. UPDATE #2 (30/07/2024): We want to thank the amazing community for their support, please keep sharing and let's gather all the equipment and items we need to get Closet Share up and running. Closet Share is a community-focused program dedicated to collecting local clothing donations, washing and sorting them into tiers, and cataloging them on an online store for community members to access. We provide affordable clothing solutions through a tiered system, with Tier 1 offering free clothing for low-income families and organizations, and Tier 2 allowing the broader community to purchase items at low costs. Additionally, our Bags of Rags program repurposes unusable textiles to prevent them from ending up in landfills, contributing to environmental sustainability. We are excited to announce that we have recently acquired a warehouse to expand our operations. Unfortunately, we did not receive the government funding we applied for, and the warehouse requires some renovations to get it functioning for our program. We need various supplies, and if you have any items that you would be interested in donating to Closet Share, we would greatly appreciate it. We are also always looking for volunteers to help with the growth and building of Closet Share's warehouse. Your support can make a significant difference in our community!
