Continuing the news from the Victoria Mine disaster in Na-Cho Nyäk Dun traditional territory near Mayo, in the Yukon. It's now being reported that Yukon Government may take-over the clean-up of the heap leach spill, in an effort to minimize the impacts on the environment. If that happens, it will end the same way as almost every hard rock mining operation to take place in the territory. Hopefully the security deposit held by Yukon Government will be sufficient to cover that cost. Chief Dawna Hope has reiterated that she is not against mining in NND traditional territory, as it provides economic opportunities for the community and jobs to citizens. From my experience, many Indigenous Nations feel the same way. Here's my simple recommendations for how to get mining right: 1) Mining operations should be held to the highest environmental standards. If it's not financially viable for them to do that, then the mine is not financially viable. The good news: the ore doesn't disappear, so someone can always come back later when it is. 2) Mining has to be limited to the right locations (determined through consultative processes like land relationship planning) to maximize benefits and minimize negative environmental, community and cultural impacts. 3) Mining should only proceed with the free, prior and informed consent of any impacted Indigenous Nations. Processes should also be in place to ensure that free, prior, and informed consent is maintained throughout the operations of the mine. I genuinely believe that if we followed these rules, we'd be much closer to the goal of sustainable mining. (edited to incorporate a suggestion from Emily Caddell)
