Very often we associate learning with growth and development, but I am curious: what is something you had to UNLEARN for the sake of your growth and development? Minoritized people are often taught to see themselves through the lens of the majority culture—one that prioritizes certain norms, behaviors, and values as the standard. Dominant culture often offers a perspective of minority communities imposes limitations on how minoritized individuals perceive their potential, value, and even the very essence of who they are - it minoritizes them. The process of unlearning was a critical aspect of my own identity development and shifted the way I saw myself, interacted with the world, and showed up in my work. For me this looked like: 1. Recognizing Internalized Beliefs: Understanding that societal biases aren’t inherent truths but constructs that benefit the majority. 2. Reclaiming Identity: Exploring aspects of myself that were previously suppressed, like cultural practices or personal expression. 3. Affirming Self-Worth: Accepting my identity as valuable, which helped challenge limitations placed on me. 4. Leading with Identity: Living authentically and advocating for change, creating space for others to learn and grow. 5. Contributing to Collective Unlearning: Inspiring others, both within their community and in the broader society, to rethink assumptions and embrace inclusivity. What has this looked like for you? I would love to hear your thoughts below. You can engage more deeply in this conversation on #UpTheAnti where I am a guest alongside Dr. Alex Iannucci and Sydney Lobosco, M.A. of Blueprint Evolution where we talk about this, exam power structures, and share stories and laughs as we do it! In times of change and division, conversations about diversity, inclusion, and belonging have become more urgent than ever. These discussions often feel deeply personal, shaping how we connect with each other and understand the world around us. Academia frequently examines systems of inequality, but does it provide enough space for emotions, personal stories, and the lived realities of those impacted by these systems? How can we better connect academic theories with human experiences? What can we learn from personal narratives about identity, resilience, and the desire for understanding? This event invites speakers and participants to engage in open, meaningful dialogue, creating a space for empathy and connection. By embracing vulnerability and sharing stories, we aim to bridge divides and foster deeper understanding of ourselves and each other. Navigating conversations about race has been a challenge throughout history, influenced by cultural norms of each era. There's a tendency to prioritize comfort and avoid difficult discussions, particularly when it comes to race. As a result, opportunities for learning and growth through open, honest conversations can be missed. As we reflect on the lessons from our life, let's continue to build a culture where honest conversations about race are valued and encouraged. Thoughts on how to do that? #EducateYourself #SystemicRacism #DEI #InclusionMatters #antiracisthotdog

📣 Blog Update 📣 Every critical conversation has its context and content, but almost all touch on identity and injustice. Pinning down a few key terms can help us, and our students, colleagues, and caregivers, think and talk about critical topics more clearly. Consider what we understand when we hear culture, identity, and injustice. Do these words carry pre-existing understandings or perhaps bias for you? Do any of them trigger a response—emotional or other? We know impact > intent, which implies misunderstood vocabulary could unintentionally cause harm. So, when working in groups, delivering professional development, leading a meeting, or teaching a class, I like to define the language I frequently use. Setting the stage in advance can reduce misunderstandings and support critical dialogue. #interculturaldevelopment #definingculture #identity #inclusivepractice #inclusion #antibias #communitynorms #criticalconversation #criticalthinking #criticaldialogue
