People and culture strategist, DEI and organizational development leader

Very often we associate learning with growth and development, but I am curious: what is something you had to UNLEARN for the sake of your growth and development? Minoritized people are often taught to see themselves through the lens of the majority culture—one that prioritizes certain norms, behaviors, and values as the standard. Dominant culture often offers a perspective of minority communities imposes limitations on how minoritized individuals perceive their potential, value, and even the very essence of who they are - it minoritizes them. The process of unlearning was a critical aspect of my own identity development and shifted the way I saw myself, interacted with the world, and showed up in my work. For me this looked like: 1. Recognizing Internalized Beliefs: Understanding that societal biases aren’t inherent truths but constructs that benefit the majority. 2. Reclaiming Identity: Exploring aspects of myself that were previously suppressed, like cultural practices or personal expression. 3. Affirming Self-Worth: Accepting my identity as valuable, which helped challenge limitations placed on me. 4. Leading with Identity: Living authentically and advocating for change, creating space for others to learn and grow. 5. Contributing to Collective Unlearning: Inspiring others, both within their community and in the broader society, to rethink assumptions and embrace inclusivity. What has this looked like for you? I would love to hear your thoughts below.
