Legacy can be the fuel of legends. But no company makes it to 100 years without hard work, trauma, guts, risk but also a workforce that stands steadily behind them. As Peckham Industries celebrates that centennial including one of their many regional events at their Shaftsbury operation on June 15, the essential words are connection and mastery. In the construction and concrete business, there is a volatility of course but it is about holding the course. With the fourth generation coming up through the ranks currently and still going strong, the bedrock of the business continues to flourish. Peckham Industries, Inc. President and CEO of Women's Affordable Housing Network (recovering Tax Partner in Affordable Housing industry)
What inspired me to work in the affordable housing industry? Can't wait to hear from our panelists Nov 18th in the Windy City! Two pivotal experiences shaped my path: Volunteering for @Junior Achievement each year in Charlotte, NC. I learned firsthand about food insecurity, financial struggle, and unsafe neighborhoods. I’ll never forget asking the children what they were dressing up as for Halloween—one little boy burst into tears because his mom couldn’t afford a costume, and none of the students trick-or-treated in their own neighborhood. (Happy to report my team at PwC bought the entire class costumes.) Poverty Simulation hosted for employees by PwC opened my eyes to the uphill battle faced by those financially behind. Simple things like having direct deposit versus riding a bus to a check-cashing agency, or the dilemma of sick children keeping a parent from work translating to no pay for that day (no paid PTO), reminded me how fragile financial stability can be. These experiences gave me a deep sense of purpose—to help ensure that everyone has access to safe, affordable housing and the opportunity to live in thriving communities. It’s about creating security, opportunity, and dignity for all. #AffordableHousing

You can gain incredible insights by working in different parts of the same sector. CJSC, LLC Principal Chris Musei-Sequeira, PMP entered the aviation sector through government, where he helped establish new aviation environmental policies and tools at the Federal Aviation Administration. He then became an airport consultant, where he became a user of the policies and tools that he helped develop -- an enlightening experience! If you have the opportunity to work in different parts of your professional sector, consider taking it! #business #industry #government
Current students and young professionals often ask me if they should go right into consulting or seek hands-on experience at an agency or in a field first. I always counsel that it depends: consultants can be better at their jobs when they have first hand experience of systems and practices; agencies can benefit from fresh perspectives and honed business skill sets. For me, gaining lived experience at agencies like New York City Economic Development Corporation and The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey were invaluable to understanding how policies and budgets are made - and then how those translate into reality. The Leadership Fellows program at the PANYNJ gave me an opportunity to work in port operations in Brooklyn and Staten Island, and exposure to the realities of planning decisions on the local port economy. Expanding the Brooklyn Greenway to run in front of the port's main gates, watching the Brooklyn Bridge Park boom, witnessing the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and supporting the recovery, assessing capital needs - to live it daily is to understand it. And then there are days like the one below, during Fleet Week, hosting Op Sail, a few hours before a global pop star performs for the USO, coordinating security and prepping to open a secure facility to the public. On this, the final official day of #blackhistorymonth, we are going to take a bit of a turn and focus on two *current* business development #historymakers right here in Louisville. If you have not had a chance to meet James Beckett and Johnetta Roberts, then you have at least been - or will be - impacted by their business development work in West Louisville. In his own words, Re:land Group founding partner James H. Beckett describes his passion and drive: "I build things that were not previously there. This includes 'hope.' Embarking on purpose-driven journeys to make transformational change takes conviction and courage. My passion for building transcends industries, organizational charts, job titles and international borders. Being comfortable with the uncomfortable runs in my veins and it is time to inspire my colleagues to get a bit uncomfortable for the betterment of others. I am always considering the possibilities to create a better future." Johnetta Roberts is making her own mark on business development that focuses on the needs and voices of the community, and uplifts community members as critical stakeholders in any business development project. The Founder and CEO of The 40 & 1 Company -- a real estate project and business initiatives consulting firm based in Louisville's west end -- reflects, "I grew up in a neighborhood that was rich with people but lacked financial investment and wealth building opportunities. I founded my company because I want children currently living in Louisville's west end to enjoy vibrant and safe commercial buildings full of thriving businesses in their neighborhoods." There is much, much more to come from these two local history makers, and we at Bakers Studio are thrilled to have a front-row seat to the action. #blackhistorymonth #wmbe #businessdevelopment #louisville #westlouisville #fortyandone #relandgroup #bakersstudio
