With more than 60 projects outlined in its 2040 Master Plan, the airport aims to accommodate the region's rapid growth. The groundbreaking for the addition of three gates on the west end has already begun, marking a $165 million project. However, the showstopper is the $4 billion plan for a second, midfield concourse with 10 additional gates, set to start in 2026. Insightful article explaining the issues with having a single underground rail corridor connecting concourses in a “toast rack” configuration, creating a single point of failure for the system as a whole. Many global hubs were designed this way. Think of Heathrow and Atlanta amongst many. Are we seeing a trend away from this concept? Bridges are more affordable than tunnels, but they are clunky unless their level is integrated with the head house, like at LGA TB. Denver is reaping the fruits of “value engineering” at the design stage. If they had invested in a second or even a third tunnel, everything would have been different. There would be redundancy and the ability to upgrade one while using the other. They could still be growing their toast rack, but that is now off the table. Cut and cover tunnels built on day one are no more costly than building a basement. You have gotta love the value engineers!
