When there is passion, purpose and authenticity the story always evolves. 18 years ago this week our co-founder Frank O'Connor set up his first design organisation, the award winning Ecodesign Centre. From day 1 success followed success and over the next 7 years the Ecodesign Centre became an internationally recognized brand. Knowledge & tools were created to feed into product design processes and business strategies. Product design courses with sustainability, circularity embedded started to evolve. Policy changes were instigated across many government departments, particularly in Wales. The centre was consistently rated in the top 5 global research centres in the field, winning numerous high-profile large contracts, awards & accolades along the way. Despite the international success Frank was not satisfied with the progress. The centre was doing exceptionally well but the planet was getting sicker. While new government policy had been created it was largely being ignored. And bar a few notable exceptions businesses continued with business as usual. Greenwashing was on the rise as were global consumption levels. It was time for something new, that something became anois with our co-founder Jude Sherry. This something new has brought a whole new approach to design, art, activism and culture change reflected in the highly impactful ongoing #Derelictireland campaign, which has gained global attention, including being recently covered in The New York Times. For my trendwatching report, I developed the concept “Rooted Future”, which explores the connection between nature’s evolution and future technological innovations. Inspired by biomimicry, this trend highlights how nature’s designs can lead to sustainable tech solutions, such as self-cleaning surfaces, Velcro, and SLIPS technology, as discussed by BBC Earth. “Rooted Future” isn’t just about mimicking nature, but creating a partnership where technology enhances and is enhanced by natural processes. It envisions eco-friendly innovations like bioluminescent plants for sustainable lighting and plant walls for stress reduction in workspaces. This concept appeals to a younger, eco-conscious audience, driving the future of technology that integrates with nature. Turning waste into something wonderful isn’t always quick or easy, but it’s always worth it! 💪💚 In this process, I take Royal Mail trolley sleeves, carefully cutting them up to unlock their hidden potential. I remove the clips and springs and cut through the tough material to create the foundation for the new items. A green horizon? 🌅 We must imagine a sustainable future to help break away from the restrictions and rules of today. What does a sustainable future look like, feel like, and taste like? After years of working to fuel the green transition at DDC – Danish Design Center, we've found that many of us have a strong vocabulary for what not to do about sustainability. Too often, the debate about green transition becomes a finger-pointing exercise instead of a joint discussion about how the sustainable transition might drive better lives. It IS difficult to imagine a sustainable future. But we need to train our imagination to start imagining society differently. Especially today, where so much of the public debate revolves around conflict and division. Through design disciplines such as speculative design, futures design and scenario design, we have tools to do just spark our imagination. That is why I am excited and proud that DDC – Danish Design Center, together with Industriens Fond, CONCITO and Ellen MacArthur Foundation, have launched the project Green Horizon The aim is to create a future vision for a climate-neutral industry by 2045 and inspire SMEs and the industry to think differently and proactively about a greener future. Over the next six months, we will collaborate with industry stakeholders to define a prototype of a shared vision for the future. This vision will kickstart a conversation about what a sustainable production industry could look like.
